Hi all,

Its suggested on this site (samples included):-

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx

That a sizable cpu speed is needed but I saw reference to a posted
(somewhere?) that they
used a 2Gig cpu and only upgraded their video card and managed to play
the 1080p
samples at full frame rate without problems,

Is anyone able to play the samples on the above link and advise what
hardware, specifically
video cards they could get away with ?

So is this the hdtv dvd you are referring to ? without even played the disc
you were making claims there are a lot of HDTV dvds that are available
that sounds pretty stupid to me. I have played T2 disc with a P4 2.4Ghz
and 128MB low end Gigabyte Redeon 9200,

In respect of what, I am asking what the minimum hardware is to play these samples,
which btw are not true hdtv because they are only 1440 x 1080 not the 1920 x 1080.

> without even played the disc
> you were making claims there are a lot of HDTV dvds that are available

I didnt make claims there are 'a lot' I "suggested" they will become more common
and I observed there are some titles. Why do you need to exagerate to make
up an abusive comment - do you like calling people stupid when you dont check
the facts ? :(

> I have played T2 disc with a P4 2.4Ghz

Huh ? So you bought a T2 disc, where did you get it from and how much was it ?

and is it 1440 x 1080 or hdtv 1920 x 1080 ?

if your card has any built-in hardware decoder ?

Really ?

those files are not mpeg/2 they are microsoft's attempt to bring out yet another
standard and try to get a march on the market and push higher end hardware
in kahoots with Intel - they are WMV !

Or are you saying thats the same ?

Did you manage to play them on an MPEG/2 decoder card with low end CPU ?

mmm Seven seems the odd one out, well I remember they used to have
Debbie Hillhouse - the most beautiful girl on a game show many years
ago and stuck with them ever since, now Debbie's gone and Seven is
sticking with 576p versus abc, 9, 10, sbs at 1080i. Reason to change
since here in Perth Seven *still* has a loop on their hdtv, didnt see
Angie Jolie except on their SD channel :( Whats Up Seven - no money to
play the widescreen version - even on SD :(((((

Seems Kerry Stokes you are low on doh for keeping up to date with
the higher quality from other broadcasters :( As 9 and 10 had widescreen
w/end movies in hdtv, beat you by miles ;)

I recall someone saying there was some special license for it, not just buy
and walk away - I guess I gotta buy the bullet and look it up, could you
play that on any high end DVD (non PC) player and get a component
video out which an HDTV could sync to ?

Bummer, not that extreme from 1920x1080 broadcast standards here in Aust,
but still better than basic dvd I guess,

Yeah, they suck. 576p is pitiful compared to the other channels' HD.

Well technically, as I said, it's not 1080i, it's 1440x1080 that's
broadcast.

You can buy it easily enough. When you play it though, it needs to check a
US server. You can fool it by using a proxy.

Nope.

See above.

Yeah, quite a bit.

There is no much facts or demonstrated knowledge in window media version of
the T2,
not to abuse you are making it like there is a lot of this type of material
to play around
with, the sad truth there less than 10 of titles available. I think it is to
naive or stupid
to think there will be a lot of these type of discs continue to stream out.

it ?

I did not buy the disc but I did try the disc for 12 days, I loaded up on my
computer
and got onto the internet, set my proxy to a US based proxy server and trick
the
Microsoft into believing I was in US, the trick worked the first two or
three time, but
the guys at Microsoft may have got smarter, I could not get the disc to work
after
10 days.

Winfast A280/128MB. I guess the graphics card is a big link in the chain -
we'd be running the same FSB speed, I have 512 RAM, but nothing high spec.
Average drives etc. Maybe worth trying to overclock your card a bit? Use
the Winfast speed runner application? I've been running at almost 20%
overclock on both chip and memory for about a year now... no smoke yet!
Going a little higher and I get 'lightning bolts' - glitches - in intensive
3D games...

Worth turning off antivirus briefly too if you want to test your max
performance.

Cheers, Jason - remove macrovision to reply : )

Robotica_720 plays fine on my Celeron 2.4 with 400 FSB and 256 megs DDR 333 RAM.
Video is on board 4X AGP 32 megs.

huh ?

Where did I (even once) say there was a lot of this material around ?

Why are you bringing up words like naive or stupid when I have never
made the statement you are accusing me of, can you stay focussed
without having to make even partial veiled personal attacks ?

Re-read my posts on this and you will hopefully realise you are
arguing against what you thought I said - not what I actually did
say, or are you doing this on purpose to provoke a reaction, it
unfortunately doesnt make you out to be that credible a debater.

Try and realise there will be more titles coming out on higher definition,
this isnt going to happen tomorrow but i will happen,
because more and more people are getting higher end monitors,
like plasmas or large LCDs and finding its worth the extra to go
for higher definition - ostensibly for HDTV broadcasts, Plus over
here in Australia the analog TV transmission is going to be phased out
after 3 years for most commercial networks. When you play 'ordinary'
DVD's they start to look quite poor, especially given its hardly
better than standard PAL broadcast standard.

Watching a movie in widescreen transmitted on HDTV from a
commercial station at 1920x1080i is soooo much better by far
than on DVD - the difference is staggering even to the untrained eye
(provided of course your monitor is HDTV capable).

Side note: I am not in any way condoning the WMV from MS, or
saying there should be more around, I am interested in what players
there are and the general trend.

Yeah I can play all the 720p stuff its only
some of the 1080 that makes my machine falter :(

Athlon 2400+, 512meg ddr 333, winfast ddr t with 4x agp 64 meg,
not sure what fsb it is, but 275 or 333 sounds familiar,

I'll try over clocking the video card as someone else suggested,
tried to do the cpu the other day on an epox m/board - could only
take 1% overspeed before it baulked, had to reset the m/brd
after that, but the cpu was a boxed one !

think I'll go for the barton core and give the other to my son,

thanks for the info

Should be a 266 bus - I think 2600 was the first with 333 (but also had a
rare 266 version initially)

We don't get 1920x1080 broadcast, but yes, it still is impressive.

PS Please snip that signature abortion of yours when you reply to people.

mmm, I was under the impression that 9 and 10 and maybe ABC did
true HDTV which is 1920 x 1080i but 7 only did 720 x 576p,

Is there some link that unequivocally states what the equivalent
resolution is for the HDTV signals 9, 10 and ABC are broadcasting ?

I'll do it for you, because I care ;)

None that I've found, but if you read the digital TV boards at:
http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php you can see people who work at the
stations confirm it's only 1440x1080. If you have a PC HDTV card you can
display info which agrees with that res. too.

Ah - seems logical, thats horizontally twice 720, so a screen with 1280
horizontally
addressable aint so bad afterall - provided the electronics handles it...

But the jump from 576p to 1080i doesnt seem so logical to me,

So why are panel manufacturers that offer 1920 x 1080 saying this is
true HDTV compatible ?

Is that for other parts of the world ?

but

Didnt Alston say we have the best system in Australia ?

probably because that will be able to handle all that HDTV can through at
it.
sure, we currently only use the 1440 variant, but that will probably change
(might take a few years but).
