Best Divx player to buy today?

I've been reading thos forums for a while but is hard to make a decision.

My needs are:

Divx (all versions), Xvid, region free DVD, 5.1 audio out and 16:9 as is going to be used in a home theatre.

Basically I am asking 2 questions:

1) Which is the BEST player (divx all versions, xvid) on the market today, regardless of price, and why is it the best?

2) Which is the BEST VALUE for money on the market today and what are its disadvantages when compared to the best?

I red about Sigma chip 85XX and just when I was ready to buy I red something about a new chip on the market MTK1389. I am confused so I need guidance. I want to make sure I understand the market and make an informed decision before I buy anything.

I woud wait a few weeks and look at players with the Mediatek (1389) chip. This new decoder chip has uptodate features for xvid and divx (not that divx is worth much :) ) qpel and GMC support is built in zoom features beat everything else around. Jok11n can probably tell you where you could find a player with the new chipset.

A couple of very subjective questions here, which is the best can depend on what matters to you, what's best to you and what's best for me might not be the same thing. Features, performance, chipset, connectivity, after sales support, upgrade ability, there's a lot of thing to what makes something the best. Read through some of the posts on other players and you'll see that different people have different ideas about what they think is lacking, sure there is some common ground, stuff that you would consider minimum spec, but some people make some wish list type stuff that some people would never worry about. So what matters to you may be completely different. You mention that you are looking for something for home theatre use, is it the DVD performance of the player that you are concerned about for home theatre use but also looking for mpeg4 capability? I can't imagine that the priority is mpeg4 for home theatre use, unless I have a misconception of what you mean by home theatre. Even the best of the encoded samples that I have don't compare to DVD when viewed on high quality equipment, although the difference is not so noticable on lower spec equipment, I have tried these in a wide variety of combinations and depending on what you are using to view with the results can vary.

Best value can again depend on what you want in a player, value doesn't always equate to price, you need to define what is most important to you and see which players offer what you need. You will start to see more players in the market offering mpeg4 playback so you will have more variety, but at the moment there are only a few chipset manufacturers so the performance of players based on the same chipsets will be very similar, features may be different though.

I have an MTK based player at the moment and although I haven't had a lot of time to try each format and setup scenario it is apparent that it supports more formats out of the box than the ESS based players, athough you will start to see some players with the next generation ESS chipset soon and it's likely that a lot of the issues that ESS have had with their first chip will be resolved in the next, they have a good track record for improving the chips with each new release.

Yeah I will be using a divx player as a dvd player in my home theatre environment but I will like the capability to view some dives from time to time as well. There a good encoded movies out there that are worth watching ona big screen since the quality is excellent.

Now where can I buy an MTK1389 based player from? ANy sellers in Australia yet? Overseas?

Perchance have you heard of any units coming out soon that not only provide divx support and prog scan but also offer DVDA and or SACD support in the bundle?

DVDA was mentioned the other day as something that might be included in the next models coming, no mention of SACD though.
