I hear people moaning about whether digital is worth paying the extra.... Well if you have a decent sound system and TV then of course it is. With an S-Video connection (component would be nice) and an optical output you can watch movies in 5.1 digital sound now that to me is enough to make me want digital... then through it FTA digital channels and mutil angle fox footy and movies on demand I would be prepared to pay more than the anologue service but it is the same price for the basic package if you are a sat customer and the extra for cable customers in my eyes is definetly worth it....
your ideas on this?
Marauder

Yup. Same thoughts here :)
And also, from what I understand, S-video will only be available through
SCART. The Pace DS420 specs show the s-video connector as "optional", and I
am led to believe Foxtel's line of Pace DS420's does not have s-video, only
SCART.

Well hopefully they supply a scart adapter to svideo but I doubt it... and I doubt they will supply an s video cable and a optical cable as this is normally supplied by the contracter anyway... so you will be up for around $50+ in your cables and adapter.

They won't supply adaptors, but I have heard they will supply cables such as
scart to rgb, scart to svideo, scart to composite, and of course scart to
scart.

If scart to svideo definately needs an adaptor of some kind, then I just
don't know. But I have been told that from a tech, that they'll be supplying
those cables.

Component (thru the STB's SCART) will give you DVD quality and s-video is
very close to DVD quality.

It does say somewhere on the website but this is info from a foxtel worker. It is mainly for FBO and some movies......
Also it is not possible to get component from scart... you can only get rgb through scart which is different to component so the best possible if you don't have scart on your TV is S-Video and then using a optical or coaxial cable to achieve digital sound.

FBO is in AC3. It's been on 2 press releases. AC3 = Dolby Digital 5.1

Not all movies are in Dolby Digital 5.1.
AC-3 is very decpetive for description. Dolby Digital can be anything from
1.0 to 5.1.

Yes, while AC3 can be anything from 1.0, it is generally used for 5.1
delivery.
In this case, Foxtel is using AC3 as a general term, which would indicate
5.1 delivery.

Can only disagree... AC-3 in broadcast terms typically means Dolby Digital
2.0. For those of you with FTA Digital STB's, just check any broadcast
which is AC-3. I have not seen ONE FTA broadcast with DD 5.1.
Nowhere in FOXTEL's releases have they said 5.1. They have used the term
AC-3. If you're lucky, it'll be able to be processed as Pro Logic.
I'll be sticking to DVD's for movies. The most important aspect to me is
the sound!!!

"Prologic" has been broadcast for quite a long time already, since of course
it is encoded in to the normal stereo channels.
The sound is probably one of the most important aspects for me too. But I am
assured AC3 through Foxtel WILL be 5.1.

I can assure you over half the movies on Showtime will have a 5.1 mix from
March 1- obviously only accessible through the new boxes.

Not all movies are encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1. Therefore the usage of the
term is indeed very loose. General usage is believed to be 5.1 when it can
be something else.

Steven,
Thank you for your assurances... Perhaps you can obtain an assurance from
FOXTEL to kill this thread.
In the absence of an official, absolute assurance from Foxtel, I will wait
and see. I can't trust that they will provide DD 5.1 without some evidence.
As it stands at present, they cannot be accused of deception as they have
only said AC3.
George.

Also, the only reason why "DD 5.1" has not been used on FTA is because of
limited bandwidth, which is why they still use mpeg layer 1 and 2 through
their satellite feeds. And because "Prologic" has been around ever since
shows were encoded with it, well that's good enough for them anyway since it
doesn't require anymore bandwidth and resides in the stereo signals.
Foxtel will broadcast FBO in 5.1 as well as some other channels.
And my "assurances" were from a Foxtel executive some time ago. But this was
only a confirmation. In the press release it states "enhanced surround
sound". Really, this would and could only indicate 5.1, as "Prologic" is
already used and does not need to be AC-3 encoded. And the only other
significantly better thing than "Prologic" is 5.1
I'm looking forward to that nice blue light on my receiver! :)
