Was helping a neighbour yesterday setting up his new TV. I read in the user
manual that amongst other things, a DVD player was NOT supported on the
"AV2" scart connector, but the rest were ok. Why on earth would this be an
issue? I have not had much experience with SCART in the past. Why would the
TV care what device was on the other end of the cable, as long as it was
transmitting a video signal?

That doesn't make any sense you're right, it's probably a bad translation
from the original japanese text A SCART connection usualy passes a
Composite + RGB+ stereo sound (and sometimes includes a Component signal
depending on the hardware). Very likely the manual means that it doesn't
support SCART RGB on that input.

You'd be surprised. I have a TV with three scart inputs on the back (Philips
32PW8806). Anyway, while scart should be able to accept RGB, s-video, and
composite, they have actually only wired up two of them for RGB. One of them
only does composite - go figure?
Luckily, at this stage, I only have two devices that require RGB - a dvd
player and digital STB. A third will soon come (hopefully) being the foxtel
digital box. I believe I will be able to daisy chain it via the DVD player
or digital STB - both have two scart sockets.
