Just thinking of getting one of these second hand, so I can do without
my digital surround pre-amp (and passive stereo pre-amp), and let the
DVD player do the DD/DTS decoding. But I want my CD's to still sound
good (currently use a Rotel Michi passive pre-amp for CD's). Is the
Sony up to the task for this? I realise the Sony has a stereo bypass
so I could still use the Michi pre-amp for stereo, but that would mean
the signal going through an extra set of interconnects which can't be
a good thing.
My other components are Dynaudio SPecial25's for mains and Rotel Michi
Pre-amp, Power amp and CD player.

When released some years ago, a well known reviewer stated that it was an
extremely good surround sound pre amp and was also up to the task of being
an extremely good stereo pre amp........
from an Australian hifi mag. I still have the review........
hope this helps

Sony ES (Extreme Standard I think) series are all supposed to be good
quality like the other audio equipment that hi-fi enthusiasts use.

Extremely good both in absolute terms and as value for money. I still use
one in my main (fairly high-end!) system, and have done so for the past
couple of years or so, being more than happy with it.
