Has anybody had one of these long enough to be able to comment on the
life-span of the lamp, and how much does a new lamp cost?

Thanks in advance,

Tony.

In Australia nobody has had one long enough to burn out the lamp.

Mine is only around 200 hours, but still looks damned stunning ;-)

Lamps cost around $400 apparently.

Hell, I am still on the first lamp of my now "ancient" SONY 10HT. Must be
3 years old at least by now !

A newbie question here. Does the lamp usually die suddenly or does it
degrade slowly over a long period (as in getting darker & darker, plus
maybe colour shift)?

If it degrades over a long period, how noticeable would it be when it
gets close to the quoted life? (example, quoted = 4000 hours. Is there
much difference between the pictures at new & at the 3800th hours?)

Do you have any light bulbs in your house?

How do they normally fail?

I expect it's pretty well the same thing. Gradual (probably imperceptible
for the user) dimming...then..POP.

actually from what i've read i believe that's not the case, the brightness
decreases over time, depending on the model and lamp, this means that after
X hours the brightness will be significantly reduced to the point where it
requires replacing, i don't believe you can watch a lamp until it goes
'pop'.

To be honest, I have almost no incandescent light bulb at my home now
since I have replaced most of them with energy-saving "mini
fluorescent" bulk (well they do look & act like fluorescent bulbs).

IIRC, incandescent bulb maintain the brightness until the end-of-life
when it would flicker for a while and then pop. The end-cycle is
pretty quick.

I've read somewhere that you don't want to wait and get to that point as it
causes more damage than just a simple replacement. The story goes, when the
pj says replace then go and do just that. Then again that could be the
spares dept talking it up :-)

I can't think of any reason to replace a bulb before it's end of life, other
than the poor picture quality it projects towards the end.
