View Full Version : LCoS Screens

We will be launching the latest LCoS screens by mid to end of April and we are interested in getting some viewpoints from the marketplace.
Comparing the LCoS screens to some of the plasmas and LCD TVs, the picture quality of the LCoS screens are superb. There is the added bonus of not worrying about burn-ins of plasmas and latency problems of LCDs and simply replacing the light bulb will rejuvenate the screen.
The disadvantage is the price, and as a rear projection TV, the depth is greater than plasmas and LCDs but much less than CRTs.
A few of the major brands have already baulked at launching the product in Australia, although it will eventually be here. So any thoughts from you will be appreciated.

Hi,
Yeah, your web-site is still down :-(
I am currently in the market for a big flat-screen, I have discarded LCD for poor contrast, and field of view. I am sure in a few years time, these problems will be sorted out but can't wait for that long.
Plasmas are looking good right now, and I am seriously considering buying one.
I was seriously interested in LCOS technology, and had a few email exchanges with Phillips Australia in this matter. However they mentioned that it won't be here for another year or so, at least.
Now that you are saying you will be bringing LCOS screens, I am very interested in knowing more about them, i.e. approx. cost, brand/s, sizes etc.
Thus any more information from you would be of much appreciated,
cheers,
Ritesh

Our webserver is back up and running again. We apologise for any inconvenience it may have caused.
The LCoS screen we are bringing in will be 50" HD compatible. It will be branded TRIO. We cannot announce pricing as this is determined by the retailers.
As an aside, we have invited several journalists to review our product so it will be interesting to get their feedback as well. If you dont mind me using this analogy, parents will always find their children beautiful, so it is best if we get independent reviews.
As mentioned before, any viewpoints or experiences that anyone would like to share with us will be much appreciated.

Yeah. Don't it piss you off when people say they can't give prices because
of such and such????

Rubbish.
Intel have been making a song and dance about LCoS and the main point
they made was great picture and VERY CHEAP price.
They say they are going to mass manufacture the chips and bring down
the cost of big screen TVs.

They should be cheaper the other RP sets.

And still no-one knows of an 'estimate', price wise. Where's the OP?

Actually, what they have been saying is that LCOS should *eventually*
reap some benefits from Moore's Law. This is the same phenomenon that
drives down the price of PC's over time. But these benefits can come
in two forms:
1) At a given level of quality, you can get cheaper chips over time
because as they get smaller the yields go up.
2) At a given price, you can increase the "performance" (speed,
resolution, etc) over time because you can fit more transistors in the
same space.
Just taking PC's as an example, you tend to get little bit of both...
somewhat cheaper, and somewhat better. Some other observations:
=> Intel is not going to produce LCOS chips solely to drive the price
of HDTV's down. That does not maximize their revenue, or help them
amortize R&D the best.
=> The first Intel LCOS chips can't cost much less than TI's DLP
chips. Maybe a little, but not that much. They're not fundamentally
too much easier to produce, and TI has already got decent yields.
Intel is playing catch-up with the first generation. Maybe the second
generation as well (TI is not standing still).
=> Subsequent generations of chips will come at about the same pace as
Intel's PC processors. And just like PC chips, it will literally take
a new "Fab" facility to accomplish each "shrink". Don't expect
revolutionary price cuts more than every 18-24 months at best.
=> Intel has no working samples, or manufacturing partners yet. This
will not happen overnight. Xmas 2005 is probably their target
timeframe.
