I have been looking into them recently, but the post here where I am
is too slow. It takes about 5 working days to get from here to either
of the capital cities that have this service. At the prices, the local
video store is still cheaper. As to conveniance of delivered to the
door, the price difference is too large for me.

Typically takes 5 - 7 days for mail to get from here (Townsville, North
Qld) to Melbourne .

As an aside, there is a review of two online DVD rental sites in this
weekends AFR, in the tech section. One of them makes note of possible lag
due to the Post (5 days or so) from Melb. to Sydney

Small town in rural NSW.

the times to sent between places based on when items sold via ebay
arrived at their destination (buyer's reply "arrived today")

I've tried FetchMeMovies (Tel$tra) and now Webflicks. They both advertise
the same number of titles and their websites seem almost identical. I have
had no problem getting two deliveries a week out of Webflicks (returning
same night they were watched), but Fetch seemed to take around 4/5 business
days for returning one lot and receiving the next.

Webflicks has been 3/4 days so far (regional Vic) and they're a bit cheaper
so I'll continue with them... and not just because of their referral system!

I worked on the Telstra project which bought the webflicks software and converted it to fetchmemovies (a Telstra product).
Webflicks is cheaper for now but Telstra will have a bigger variety of movies because they signed huge contracts with Hollywood distributers.
No other Australian DVD rental website has the money to do that.

Aaah, so my thoughts were correct - the sites were too similar to be an
accident! So far I've only personally compared Webflicks and Fetch, with
some huge turnaround delays with Fetch - I'll stick with Webflicks...

For those not loitering on aus.dvd I've created a simple comparison page for
people's info:

Feel free to pass on any first hand info...

Pity their service was so bad, I would have probably stuck with them...
Webflicks seems good so far - sending new discs out as soon as returned is
checked, much quicker delivery for me than Fetch...

How many dvd's do you watch? and how expensive is your video store? I always
thought that 29 a month was only worth it for 'heavy' renters.

It's not just about how many either - the best part of online is the
range... rental timeframe is a nice flexibility too.

At the local blockbuster 1 new release dvd a week adds up to about $30
a month. Even though they have deals like 2 new releases for the price
of one during the week I don't have the time (or inclination) to watch
2 dvd's on a weeknight. Plus there's the late fees - between my
girlfriend and I we usually had to pay for at least two late returns
every month.

There are advantages other than cost as well. I quite like having a
few dvd's around to watch when I find I have a couple of hours to
kill. Given that there is unmitigated shyte on TV these days it's nice
to have four or five episodes of "Red Dwarf" or "Futurama" or whatever
ready to watch.

I do take you point though - it's not much cheaper unless you are a
heavy watcher of dvds.

I was also wondering if anyone knows if webflicks still allows you to say when you have send the dvds back (and thus get the next set of dvds sent quicker) e.g like gadget said "sending new discs out as soon as returned is
checked". Not that i'm doubting you gadget, its just that i'v looked at the site inside out and havn't yet seen anything about this yet.

Well anyways thanks for your time bbs

Hey Videoman, Webflicks seems to do multiple discs in order and sending out
new stuff once 'returned' is checked. Just seems they don't promote it
well!?!

There is an option in your wait list to collapse subsequent titles to one
item which shows that their database is 'aware' of discs being part of a
series. I guess you could override the priority yourself, but if all titles
are the same, I would expect them in order. Let you know how the 4 discs of
BlackAdder arrive!

For the returned bit, both Fetch and Webflicks will start processing your
next order once you've checked the returned box. Other places call this the
'fair go' system and really hype it up as a way to keep delivery rates fair
for regional renters... seems F/WF just include it without much fanfare.
It's a great system...
