Our VCR has busted. I'm therefore looking for a new hifi vcr preferably for
under $300.

There is a possiblity that I may want to move it to the UK at some time and
although both regions use PAL there is a difference in the tuner which I
think applies to the audio. I think some VCRs are easily switchable can
anyone here enlighten me as to which makes and models currently available
offer such a facility.

Many thanks in advance.

How much does a VCR cost nowadays? Buy a new one if you move. The ones I
brought from the UK to Aus didn't tune the TV stations (well maybe one or
two) but played back Aus and UK tapes just fine.

Yup, I'm aware that I could do that. I just thought that with a little
research I could ensure that I could get one that would be switchable. The
one we brought from the UK has the same problem you describe so I rigged up
a cable so I could use the TV tuner which unfortunately meant that the TV
had to be on if I wanted to record something.

I have a Samsung World VCR which should cover any country you may want
to go to in the future. I am willing to sell it for $250.00 ONO Let me
know if you are interested.

I think you need to look for 'Nicam stereo'... but I might be barking up the
wrong tree? Maybe it's just something to do with the UHF/VHF frequency
ranges?

I think you're right. The NICAM bit would be something else. Anyway, just
been down to Bing Lee and picked up a Samsung SV-665B for $189. I'm sure it
will be fine, if I move back to the UK and need another then so be it.

Cheers

You need the NICAM stereo in order to get stereo in the UK. Otherwise you
will just get mono sound. NICAM is a digital sound track. Our TV (analogue)
system is most simlar to the german system I believe. I think I read
somewhere that Berlin has gone completely digital and have actually now
turned off the analogue spectrum.
