XMS-888 supported subtitle formats

I have just done a test, and found that the XMS-888 supports at least 3 different subtitle formats.
These are .srt .smi & .sub

I'm starting to think that you have never seen a full movie, you spend all your time testing :D I hope everyone appreciates all your efforts, I know from my point of view you have been a big help, especially the website, it's a great resource.

when i tried to watch a dvd rip of love acually it cam with a file .sub
So I burned a dvd with the la.avi and la.sub
When I put the dvd into the xms it came up with the icon mpeg and avi
When I did the following.........................
Subtitle (.srt, .sub and .smi) support (Firmware 1.2)
To get the subtitles to work with an avi file, what you have to do, is in the Smart Navi menu
go with cursor to the subtitle file (*.srt,*.sub, .smi) and push the ANGLE button on your remote.
You should then get message that 'divx subtitle selected'.
Then just play a movie and you will get subtitles.
While watching a movie if you press subtitle button it will toggle between 'Subtitle off ' and "Subtitle 1/1"

One more thing about subtitles they are yellow and very small.
This is common on all ESS chipsets divx players.
I would preffer if they were at least 2x as big and WHITE with black shadow around them.

Are you selecting the subtitle track before you try and play the movie?

Apparently there are two (or more) types of .sub, from looking at other forums...
One is a text based format similar to .srt, but based on frame numbers, not time marks.
Like this...
{11981}{12026}-Five.|-Great.
{12028}{12094}You got an arrow right in your chest.
(Notice the frame start / finish points)
The other .sub, is a graphical format, which the ESS based chips do not support.
I believe that these are also shipped with .idx files.
You can covert these, using a suitable conversion tool, (Subresync seems to work) but it is similar to converting subtitles from a DVD (i.e. using OCR to text).
You can usually tell, as you can open one (the supported text based one)with Notepad, and it looks like that above (fairly plain text) and is relatively small (maybe 100k give or take).
Whereas the other graphical - non supported - one is large (maybe 16000k or so), and if you tried to open it with Notepad it would appear as rubbish (if it opened at all).
ESS based chipset only supports the text based formats.
p.s. .ssa format does not appear in the smart-navi list, and is probably not supported, although it is text based.

I updated to the latest firmware today. But I can't get a .srt file to work properly. It's in chinese and works when I use it on my pc but XMS 888 will only display it in gibberish characters. Could anyone help please?

Are the subtitles in chinese, or english?
I think from a brief look through the Firmware, there is only roman type characters (english / maybe spanish / french etc) supported.

It's a shame that it doesn't support chinese. Thought the player itself was made in China.

hopefully they will incorporate that in the next firmware update
