Watching the movie 15 Minutes on digital tonight, 9 HD. The info says its a
dolby digital stream but my Denon 1603 can't seem to pick it up, and is
stuck on pro-logic mode. I have an optical connection between the STB and
the receiver, the dolby digital led is lit up, and the "digital" box is
showing on the LCD, but I've tried just about everything and can't seem to
get it to switch to straight "dolby digital" mode. Works for DVD's though.
Could the stream info be lying to me or have I missed something obvious?

Your STB set to output PCM?

What do you mean by straight Dolby Digital? Only about 2 movies have been
broadcast in DD5.1 so far, the rest are DD2.0. Picking pro logic to decode
DD2.0 is what your receiver should be on.

The ABC will be doing 5.1 for the Oils Goat Island concert tonight
9/3/04
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/guide/netw/200403/highlights/225676.htm

"For digital viewers, the ABC is broadcasting it with the choice of
5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound - only the third time we've done
this. The surround mix is extraordinary, placing the viewer onstage
with the band - it's spine-chilling stuff."

Not knowing too much about digital set top boxes...but are these type of
broadcasts only avialable on HD, or is it available on SD?

I guess the real question is, is the difference between HD and SD only
related to the visual component of the signal?

thanks

Dave

It's a bit of a weird area. Yes, the only difference between SD & HD is the
visual component of the signal, the 'Definition' part refers to the video.
But there are a few little accompanying tidbits I can think of: HD is
always broadcast in DD(not necessarily, nor often in DD5.1), whereas SD can
be PCM, MPEG or DD. I think SD has the provision to include DD 5.1 audio
but it's very rare, well it is in HD too, but hopefully this will change.
Maybe someone can tell you whether the Oils' concert was in 5.1 on SD too,
not all SD boxes are capable of producing it.

I think the std for SD is only 2 ch surround however quite a few SD
boxes will pickup the DD audio stream as well.

Yes it was, and it sounded awesome.

Most are, but not all.
