Hi All,
Would like to get a DVD drive for an older PC. It's a P2 350Mhz with around 350MB RAM and 8MB Intel Video Card. Does anyone know what would be a good value for money DVD drive that would suit.
Thanks in advance, Rick

I actually had a lot of problems with my pioneer but it did last a fair while b4 it died. It did fall off the back of a truck.....if ya know whatta i mean....wink wink...
I would recommend Pioneer slot loading models. Decently prices too.

Hey the I'd say a pioneer slot load would be a good pickup too. My mate, and my sister have one and havent had any probs at all.
Meanwhile I have a *crap* sony DDU1621 - I dont know if its still available but I'd steer clear of sony dvdroms (I still like their other av stuff but). It regularly hangs during most movies at least once per viewing - and its not "faulty" either (most owners of this drive seem to have similar problems from what I've heard). :(

An 8MB graphics card? I wouldn't count on smooth playback..
I have a 16MB nvidia tnt with a P3-450(yes I need to upgrade). Even that stutters occasionally...

I've had 4 pioneer DVD116 DVD roms and all have been fine, but i've switched to the Lite-On LTD163, I currently have 3 of these, much better in my opinion, faster data throughput and very smooth playback, cheaper too.

My sister's old P2-333, 64MB, 8MB Intel I740, Hitachi 2X DVDROM machine worked fine in software mode. No stutters.
It's most likely the software you use rather than the machine.
I used to use Cinemaster 99 on it.
