At the moment im hunting around for a projector for my new house that will be ready in 2 months time.
My first choice is the CRT but I think it's just too big for where it's gonna be.
So I had a look at the Sharp XV-Z12000E, I was quite impressed with it but then after awhile i started to have headaches....I need to check it out again to make sure.
If this is the case will all DLP do this to me, and what which LCD ones should I look into.

Hi!

For the past six years or so I've been running an old Sony CRT which I got cheap second hand and does a fine job. However, it's big and heavy and a pain in the butt to set up and calibrate. It also puts out a lot of heat.

I recently moved house and last week decided I would update and treat myself to a new projector, albeit on a limited budget. I'd never been a fan of LCD and knew little about DLP. I did a lot of research, talking to people, reading reviews and so forth.

Eventually I decided on an EPSON Dreamio TW-10 LCD. It arrived a couple of days ago and I'm blown away by its quality for the price. The recommended retail is around $2700, but I ended up finding it for $2035 (which included delivery) from a place in Melbourne:

www.neversoft.com.au

In my price range, it was either the TW-10 or an In-Focus 4800 (a DLP unit that is generally well regarded). I opted for the Epson because it has a great lens that allows a good size screen from a short throw distance (ideal if you're stuck in a small room). The deciding factor, however, was that the Epson is native 16:9, whereas the In-Focus is not.

Though I've yet to really put it through its paces, thus far, it would appear the TW-10 has very good colour, pretty good luminance and contrast ratio (the blacks and whites look solid) and the "screen door effect" (usually more noticeable in lower-end LCD projectors) is a non-issue. Another plus is that it's very portable... it kind of looks and feels like a designer fan heater. I am very impresed by its image quality. Here's a link to a review of it under its American model name/number

http://www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-PowerLite_Home_10.htm

Whilst there you can read up on other projectors. What's nice about the site is that it groups its "highly recommended" models into price brackets (just remember it's in US dollars).

You'll find there's good value for money these days. If money was no object and I owned my own home instead of renting, I'd probably get a CRT with all the bells and whistles.

Anyway, hope I've been of help. Good luck with the projector hunt.

DLP looks nice - but gave me headaches too. I chose a Sanyo PLV-Z2 (native
WXGA) LCD projector and am delighted with it.

I had a look at the Sanyo and I was quite impressed with it too and also would save me lot of money compare to Sharp XV-Z12000E.
May I ask how much you paid for it. Thanks

I looked at the Sanyo as well but found it annoying that it showed subtle
'stripes' any time a large area of pale colour is displayed. The person I
went to look at them with also noticed this. I did a bit of reading on the
net and found a lot of discussion about this - its called 'vertical banding'
and the Sanyo Z2 seems to suffer from it worse than most others for some
reason.

Its important to spend a reasonable amount of time viewing a projector
before committing because, especially if you are new to projectors, it is
easy to be blown away by the overall experience and not notice annoyances
until its too late.

A single adjustment in the factory settings menu totally removed the fixed
pattern noise from my projector.
