Hey guys,

Am considering a divx/xvid player and tossing up between the two brands
XMS 888 and trio dx628.

What i notice are the main differences are the physical look of the player, and that the trio has vga out.

are there any minor improvements relating to playback or extra things it supports?

p.s also another general question for divx players, can u put like many mpeg files on a dvd and play them on the player (i.e hit next/back to switch mpegs)?

Well I don't have any answers just more questions. We are happy with the quality of the trio picture and sound playing dvds but are having problems with AVI. The computer plays the AVI with surround sound but the trio doesn't.

Are we misunderstanding the setup or does it not play AVI in surround. Any advice would be appreciated.

each have their strengths and weaknesses, there will also be other players on the market very soon so the choice will be wider. Best way would be to take some samples of what you have and try them in each player and see which one suits you best.

jok11n - do you have inside information as to what is on the horizon re Divx players?

How about Divx recorders?

Cheers.

Should be 2 or 3 new models (players) by the end of the month, no word on recorders coming yet

Any idea on what new features the new players will have? This will determine whether i wait or just buy one now.

I think that the XMS-888 is on special at the moment ($10 off) so that makes it $70 cheaper so far the support has been there for the player and it would be a matter of waiting a while to see how the trio fairs or go for the 888 now.

Feature wise they will be similar, performance is improving with each model though as the firmwares are revised. I have another ESS based unit at the moment and the firmware is quite good, it looks like a lot of work has been put into this one already to improve performance.

So the new players arent bringing out any spectacular features huh.

What are the weaknesses off the xms888 player? Any that really can annoy you?

I don't know that there is anything that you would classify as spectatular features (you might need to hint as to what you think is spectacular), as far as weaknesses go that can be a bit subjective, what's a problem for one person means nothing to the next. Check out www.xms888.tk for a good guide to what people have found to work/not work and decide for yourself what issues are relevent to you.
