I get some crackling and pops out of my rear speakers on some DVD.
Anyone know why that is so??

That happens when there are non-correctable errors in the digital audio
track. It is the audio equivalent of getting pixelation the screen when
there are non-correctable video errors.

i see. so is it a dodgy disc or a dodgy player/amp/speaker? how do i
go about fixing it?

Try cleaning the DVD
