hey all,

I have been looking for online stores to buy japanese anime. The majority of other online stores are quite expensive, anyone know of a store that has good deals? I dont mind if they are in australia or overseas, as long as they are reliable.

thanks

Well if you want Japanese R2 releases get use to the fact that they are expensive.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/489986/250-4781392-8596258

Amazon Japan -Very reasonable. There are instructions in english. Or email them fo make sure youre ordering what you hope youre ordering. I think Spirited away is on sale

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ -another reliable but expensive alternative.

If youve seen no Ghibli before maybe start with an R1 disc of Princess Mononoke . Cheaper.... $36 AUD approx from www.dvdboxoffice.com (includes shipping). Has both the original Japanese and an excellent dub (as far as dubs go of course).

ther'es this thread (http://www.madman.com.au/madboard/Forum11/HTML/002918.html) on the madman forums about "local" anime dvd online.

There are a few online anime stores that i know of in australia:

Cartoon Gallery (http://www.cartoongallery.com.au), based in sydney CBD (unless you want to pay $70 AUD for Region 1 titles, where you can get them for about $45-$50 online from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com))
Anime Anytime (http://www.animeanytime.com.au), based in canberra.

For anything anime dvd related, i would highly recommend Anime On DVD (http://www.animeondvd.com) regarding most anime dvds R1, R2, R3, R4. But for a more definative guide to R4 anime dvd, the best place to go to is the Madman Forums (http://www.madman.com.au/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro) (usually the suggestion and feedback has the latest news, glitches etc)

i am trying to look for a post i posted on the forums as i type this that i helped out a guy, with basically the same question. I'll edit accordingly

edit: it probably won't make sense, but its taken from a thread on the madman forums, also it will help you find the cheapest price and some online stores :D

Does anyone else have Jin-Roh Special Edition? Are the prices above reasonable? Any major differences between US and Canadian versions? Which is better? In other words, which one should I get?

i think its quite alright to ask many questions, just not questions that has been answered already ;)

anyway, i didn't know there was a canadian version of Jin-Roh SE, i have the one from amazon, greate dvd, quality is top notch, and you get a few decent extra's plus a booklet oh yeah the soundtrack too :D

As for prices, the best place to go to find the cheapest prices is usually DVD Price Search (http://www.dvdpricesearch.com), luckily, im such a nice guy and already looked it up for you. The cheapest place was DVD Planet (http://www.dvdplanet.com/product_listing.asp?productid=22794), $48.99 USD which equates to $89.34 AUD at the time of writing using The Universal Currency Convertor (http://www.xe.com/ucc/), which is probably the same as getting it from Digital Eyes (http://www.digitaleyes.net) or DVD Boxoffice (http://www.dvdboxoffice.com)

hope that helps

As for Region 3 Ghibli dvds (yes legit ones), i normally order my dvds from Coolashop (http://www.coolashop.com) or DDDHouse (http://www.dddhouse.com), i have never ordered from dddhouse, but i can't recommend coolashop enough if your after ghibli titles for a low price ($40 AUD shipped roughly), atm, there are only 6 of 10 R3 HK ghibli titles that are released

Laputa: Castle in the sky
My Neighbour Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away (has a "red tint" problem though, and no other release has a non-red tint version)

the following will eventually be released by IVL in the next year:

Nausicaa: Valley of the wind (heard around march 2k3)
Only Yesterday (heard around feb 2k3)
Pom Poko (heard around jan 2k3)
Whisper of the heart (should be sometime this week)

hope this has helped you

*cracks knuckles*

If your after import DVDs, stay the hell away from places like cartoon gallery ($135 for an R2 Ghibli dvd? How does go f### yourself sound, CG?).

R1: Might aswell buy from somewhere like Amazon (http://www.amazon.com) or DVD Box Office (http://www.dvdboxoffice.com) their anime selection is reasonably cheap (but keep in mind their packaging for shipping is aswell :p)

For R2 stuff, save. It's expensive. I have 4 volumes of the Series "Fruits Basket" ordered from AMOTokyo (http://www.amotokyo.com), and thats going to be $375au (what can I say? I'm a freak :p). Their prices are in US$ ands the site is in Engrish (yes, engrish), but they're located in Japan. These guys will just about bend over backwards to get hold of what you want, including collectibles and LEs that other places like CDJapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp[/url) would tell you are OOP and that they're unable to get them. AMOs shipping worldwide is a flat US$10 for EMS, and orders over $100 get EMS for free, they're a little more pricey than say, CDJapan, but for the level of service, it's worth it (I felt special when they replied to my email and called me Callan-san :D) AMO also stock anime Soundtracks and such, as do CDJapan.

If your after more than just DVDs, let us know here - As the resident Anime otaku, I'll be more than happy to point you in the right direction :D

For R1, one of the cheapest places I find for anime dvds is www.dvdpacific.com

That is where I mainly buy my anime dvd's from :)
