Hi,

I purchased a xms-888 today and have ended up with some weird errors. I first played a jpeg cd ok, then changed it to multizone (region 0) and watched a region 1 dvd. After that I played a burnt AVI (on a cdr) watched it for a few minutes, ejected it and when I tried to replay it, the video was very pixelated and jerky, so is the Audio, this is now happening on every dvd / disc I play on it. I have since then (in trying to fix it) updated the firmware to 1.2 successfully, cold booted it several times to no avail...HELP...
If I can't get it working, I'll take it back to the supplier ...

Try powering it off for about 20 minutes, to let it cool down.
Then power it back on, if the disc plays ok, it could be overheating, and therefore a faulty player.
If that doesn't help, it still could be faulty.
When / if you take it back, take some test discs in with you.

Actually, the problem started when I tried to play a burnt TDK Gold CD-R. I think that caused the problem. Does the burnt AVI have to be burnt any special way? eg at a certain speed?, it could be the way I burnt it or the particular disc. Could anyone recommend the type of cd-r media I should be using and burning recommendations - (I use Nero)...
thanks

I don't burn at above 24x for CDR this seems to give me a more stable read not only on the XMS but other DVD units and PC's as well.

Have you tried with another brand of disc? I've had problems with these discs before (not in this player, I stopped using them as some players just didn't like them) I would be interested to see what results you get with another brand

Actually, the problem started when I tried to play a burnt TDK Gold CD-R. ...

I bought them once at Betta Electrical. They have nothing to do with TDK,
they are manufactured by CMC Magnetics which is known to be one of the
worst CD manufacturers. 3 burnt disks out of 5 failed, so I just returned them.
Check your disks's manufacturer with Nero utils.

I have basically been using cheapy CD-R's (30-50c) from Strathfield / Kmart and the like.
I have found though that keeping the burn speed to 12x or less makes for a much better read. (someone posted a while back that it give the laser time to do a 'deeper' burn, and therefore is better for reading. I don't know if this is actually how it works, but it certainly does make a difference)
