I have the XMS-888 and it has firmware version 1.2, with 90% of my backup DVDs on DVD-R I put the disc in machine it says loading as normal and then immediatly says open and ejects disc, the same media has been used before and works these rejected discs are burnt in same way as workin ones. I am positive the disc have been burnt correctly they work on PC and other DVD players, does anybody have the same problem, or know the cause.

I haven't had any issue with DVD-R, It might help to add some more info, what discs are you using, brand of burner, speed you burn at, what programs you use for mastering, burning etc

The discs are from Strathfield I cant find info on them with nero or on the disc, just recordable DVD-R 4.7GB 4X Speed
The burner is a LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-451S, speed burnt is 2X and 4X I use DVD Decrypter 3.1.9.0 and DVD Shrink 3.1 to copy to hard drive
and then Nero Recode to compress to fit 4.7GB or DVD Shrink.

Nero recode might be your problem try something like DVD2One, Nero Recode actually uses its own codecs so it may differ in someway to the normal mpeg2.

yeh but with nero info tool the burnt disc comes up as mpeg2 with either Nero Recode or DVD Shrink

It might be worth trying just with the latest version of DVD Shrink which uses Nero's burning engine to rip and burn in one process and see what your results are. That's how I normally do it and haven't had a problem so far on the 888, I haven't tried the discs that you are using though, I'm not sure what they're like.
I had the exact problem described, it came about in this way...
1.) created backup using DVDshrink, but only output as files, not burning direct to disc, or image.
2.) dragged the files in Nero to the DVD and burnt. (Nero warned me that this was not the correct way to make a DVD, but I continued on anyway)
This caused the XMS-888 to eject the disc straight after loading it, just as described.
I figured that I had done it wrong.
Anyway, I just use DVDshrink to go straight to disc, or to image now.

The process with dvdshrink and nero is pritty much what I was doing too, I will give the straight to disc method ago

I tryed the burn to disc method with dvdshrink and DVD backups still dont work on XMS-888 even with new media, so I bought a Digitor C1605 it plays any dvd back up what ever way I do it on all types of media. Not happy with XMS-888 it just plays divx thats about all its good for.

That's strange. It plays fine my disks made with DVDshrink. Actually
I remember that I just dragged those created folders with Nero and burned them. No problems. However, it was only a couple of disks because now
I switched to another program.
No problems this end either...
Perhaps you could try your discs on a store xms-888, maybe there is something weird with your disc loader(?).

That would be a lot of trouble to go to, but if there was a problem with the machine you would think it would show in other areas the xms does everthing else well but will not play dvd backups (it will select what ones it plays and what ones it dosnt at random)

Have you looked at the format of the disks to see how they were burnt ?
I know that if you have udf without proper joliet bridging they will not work on the xms.
More often than not people don't set the parameters properly when burning CDs/DVDs. With CDs the burn parameters are not as critical as DVD. Also some software has a DVD player compatibility mode for DVD burning maybe that needs checking. DVD Data has to be burnt differently to DVD Video. AVI's go to DVD data not DVD Video parameters

I have checked the discs with Nero info tool the same format is on working ones and non working ones, I have been burning backups with dvd shrink 3.1 and started burning straight to disc I did 3 and 1 works on XMS, 2 don't but on my DIGITOR C1605 all 3 work fine and all 3 work on PC and on friends DVD. I think the XMS has trouble reading anything other than DivX.
Advance, it sounds to me like you need to take your XMS back to get it swapped over.
There are a lot of people in here, and the times that weird disc errors have come up, have turned out to be a faulty unit.

I have just bought myself an XMS-888 the first things I did like all my computer hardware was to update the firmware to the 1.2ver..
Also I "zero" zoned my player..
Now I use DVDdecrypter latest version to rip DVD2one 1.4.0 to transcode and CopytoDVD latest version to burn and I don't get errors EVER no matter what DVD player I use (tested on at least 16 different players)..
Also I use Vertex 4x DVD-R disc's but I have used with full success Shintaro 1x 2x and 4x disc's also Sony 2x 4x plus i've used Princo 2x 4x with no probs...
I love this machine...

Sorry 2 B late adding to this thread, but I've just purchased a Liteon 451S, started to back up some DVDs & encountered the exact same problem as advance. Have used CloneDVD 2.0.5.3 or DVDShrink 3.1 either burnt straight to disc or backed up as files & burnt with Nero 6.3 using Laser DVD-R media. About 1 out of 3 has successfully played in the XMS; the others have tried to load and then been spat out. All discs work perfectly on my PC btw.
Did advance swap his machine & if so did this fix the problem?
In the mean-time will try some other disc brands to see if XMS is finicky about Lasers.
Would appreciate some feedback as this is driving me nuts.

I don't know if this will help as I don't use the software for shrinking that you do, but if you can down size the image to about 4300 mb this may help. I have noticed on some disks that when you record right to the edge of the disk the XMS has a bit of a tizz attack. With Nero I would also make sure that overburn is switched off.
Hi basshead,
I also have a 451s, and use DVDshrink.
I have used Laser DVD-RW's with no problem, also the cheap Strathfield discs, both +R and -R.
The only time I had any trouble, was when I burnt the files manually myself (i.e. AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories) - Nero warned that this was incorrect, and then the 888 spat the disc out.
Using DVDshrink, getting it to directly burn to disc has not been a problem for me.

Thanx davidf & andw 4 your replies. I had already tried to reduce the movie size, although not as low as 4300MB, as I figured the XMS was behaving as if a full disc was 'overburned'. This was partially successful but I was still getting duds. Will have a go with the Lasers @ 4300MB file size.
Bought a 5-pack of TDK DVD-Rs from Tandy ($17.94 - all I could find on an Easter Sunday) & backed up 5 movies using DVD Shrink. Some I burned straight from the App & others with Nero. All played faultlessly in the XMS. The physical quality of the TDKs is noticeably higher although my Liteon would only burn them @ 2x despite them being labelled as 1x - 4x. So far, it appears my problem is media related & my XMS is fussy about cheap discs.
Will get an assortment from the next computer fair (Princos etc) & test them.
