Hi everyone,
I bought 2 xms 888 units yesterday (one for myself the other as a present) and after updating the firmware to v1.2 i still noticed some things which could be improved which were not discussed on the forum before.
1. A faster Fast Forward and Rewind scan mode (maybe 32x and 48x) as it's real annoying to have to wait for some files to scan on 8x speed !!!
2. Still many wmv files won't playback. I'm guessing it has something to do with the resolution of the particular files. Any chance of these issues being resolved in future updates to the firmware.
3. It would be great if mp3 files had info display (showing artist name track name etc... )
4. some wmv files won't play entirely (will only play the 1st 2 mins of a 4 min file)
5. A zoom out option wouldnt be so bad (i had that option in my previous slicker looking XMS 9550 unit) (i really wished the XMS 888 looked like the XMS 9550 ) hehehe
These are the main issues i am having at this stage.. will post more in the future as i come accross them...
I would appreciate your responses and any info as to when the v1.3 is due to be released and if it will include fixes for the above.
again thanks to andw and jok11n for their helpful answers

No date as yet on the firmware, it is currently waiting on ESS engineers. Some things you want won't happen as they are limitations of the chipset, this may change as newer models hit the market with newer variations of chipsets which are likely to support more features, that won't help players based on earlier chipsets though.

1. Try using the 'goto' button on the remote to go directly to a time mark.
2. I think wmv is not supported due to Micro$oft licensing issues / cost.
3. I agree
4. Do you mean wma files? It is a reported bug, only plays the first minute of wma.
5. I agree, a few more zoom levels would be good.

Thanks for the responses so far,
1. The goto button is an idea i guess but i think it wouldnt be so bad 2 add faster scanning modes as its easier to use.
2. some wmv files r supported though ! which is strange.. if some work cant they just get all of them to work ! well anyway its just a suggestion
3. Well thanks for agreeing on that one :P
4. No i actually mean wmv files.. It starts playing the file just fine but then it would stop half way through !!!
5. again thanks for agreeing.
6. A new issue which i noticed was that with some wmv files (again some not all) it won't allow the OSD to display remaining time on file and it won't allow you to scan through the video file.. as soon as you push the ff button it just skips to the next file !!! now i am pretty certian that this wasn't an issue before i installed the v1.2 update !!! strange huh !!! now i kinda wish i left it the way it was hmmmm
anyway thanks again for replying and for the time being i'll keep exploring this xms unit hoping to discover more good things than bad !!! :P
hi guys, good work on the 1.2 firmware, i've got a susgestion, like i've noticed that the original Microsoft (and also the hacked version Microcrap) MPEG-4 Video Codec V1 and V2 aren't supported with the DVD player but Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V3 is supported, so the 1st add-in to firmware 1.3 is to be able to play V1 and V2 formats.
another format susgestion to support could be Microsoft Windows Media Video 8 & 9 CODECs would also be nice ;)
cos it seems a fair few sites are using WMV9 (wmv8 audio) encoded video file previews n stuff like that.
and with the issue of lower bit rate audio comptability.. support for PCM 24kHz, 16 bit, stereo format would be nice too..
all these susgestion ideas are from the video recording format settings/outputs from my Leadtek WinFast TV2000 TV tuner card. :)
well thanks for reading these susgestions. :D

I don't think that it will happen. Why do you think the author of VirtualDub removed a support for WMV files ? You have to pay for a Microsoft license which will add some extra cost to your product.
I have another question. Does anybody know how to transform correctly WMV2 files into MPEG2, Divx ... ? I am having trouble doing this. Earlier verison VB 1.3.c (with WMV support) doesn't seem to support WMV2. Asftools produces some file with a bad frame rate causing later problems with A/V synchronization. Has anybody worked out a good way to reencode such disks to play on XMS888 ?
