That's the format the advertisers make the ads in.

Apparently less than 10% of accidents are caused by drivers exceeding the speed
limit.

and you should be aware some so called ws programs were in 4:3 format but 9
has up converted them and cropped them to fit the ws format,

ive been looking at this from two tvs from time to time and some dramas are
fine on 4:3 in analog but on ws they have the top and bottom cropped a little
with also some horizontal stretching, not much to notice but it does happen and
this is the same on hd and sd !

bit cute if you ask me - makes hd look the same as sd on some us dramas and
occasional local content,

What utter rubbish.

The 4:3 analog feed is derived from the 16:9 tape. And there is *only* a
16:9 tape, no separate 4:3 tape for digital. The 4:3 signal usually has
*less* image area than 16:9, never more.*

I think you're getting confused with receiver overscan, which is a problem
of individual sets. As for stretching, this would be a fault of the
individual receiver as well.

Craig.

*The only exception would be a movie shot on Super 35mm film where the HD
has an aspect of 2.35:1, SD has a full frame 16:9, and analog PAL 4:3 has a
14:9 letterbox. The original Super 35mm frame is 4:3, with the 2.35:1 and
16:9 extracted out of the larger 4:3 frame, but with
director/cinematographer approval of that framing.

I think you'll find that nein is comitted to 4:3. It centre cuts it's ws
program so that the poor 4:3 viewer doesn't get confused and changes
channels due to black bars top and bottom. The commercials pay to have the
complete picture shown, so if they are delivered in letterbox mode for 4:3
then they will be postage stamp on 16:9.

If they have a program that "must" be tx'd in ws, ie. ER, then you will get
postage stamp on digi.

Why they won't put 14:9 out on analogue is beyong comprehension.

I never said a 4:3 has more image than 16:9 - where did I ever say that !

Some 4:3 - perhaps most are derived from 16:9 I am not sure, but and this
is the POINT I was making,

I have on occasion seen a 4:3 on analog - some US dramas full screen
looks fine no comprssion or whatever - normal 4:3 format, not things
like csi or more or less up to date programs like that, but earlier ones which
on analog have classic full screen 4:3 format - however the simultaneous
HD or SD transmission has the top and bottom cropped and the picture
stretched *just a little* to make up the difference - in other words the
4:3 analog looks like its zoomed in on and stretched just a *little* to
make up the difference so it looks like a passable WS base format,
its QUITE obvious when you have two sets side by side, in my case a
76cm analog next to a 37" hd capable digital lcd widescreen,

And I do know the difference between receiver stretching a 4:3 to make
it fit - though I've never heard it called overscan, my LCD is set to 1:1
on all reception the monitor, in that mode, does not stretch, some ads
are in 4:3 and have vertical bars on each side, some other ads are in
WS but smaller - this is for compatability with 4:3 so it looks like WS
*on those sets*. I dont ever change the monitor setting to other
than 1:1 unless I am watching a DVD with 2.35:1 then I 'might'
zoom in - but not often, in any case hats on a different input and
the 1:1 for the monitor is fixed for that component video input.

So I confirm the point that some 4:3 analogs are zoomed in and
stretched by a small amount so they appear as ws in sd or hd format.
I'm sure its getting less but its not cricket now is it - it also looks
a bit grainey for those same transmissions, whereas bona-fide ws
from programs like CSI are better than DVD.

> I think you're getting confused with receiver overscan, which is a problem
> of individual sets. As for stretching, this would be a fault of the

Its not a fault or a problem - its a *setting*.

Yes. they all seem to like 4:3. So why don't the advertisers give them
the ads in 16:9 proper, not 16:9 letterbox on 4:3?....

the only postage stamped picture I see on DTV are the ads. Everything
else is either 4:3 or WS.

BTW I'm watching on a WS tv set and in Brissie.

Most everything here is 14:9 on analogue... I dont' know for where you
are so you might be right.

Some ad makers love widescreen, but want that effect on the majority of TV's
IE 4:3. So they make them letterbox 4:3.

9 derive their 4:3 from the 16:9 feed, but insist on centrecutting. So we
get that horrid postage stamp.

ABC has a policy of all promos are 16:9 safe for 14:9. The only 4:3 promos
are News/caff (they will be dragged screaming into the future one day)

I only get 10 on Digital in Hobart, yet there are all format adds on. Beats
me why.

Spose there are heaps of excuses why, art, cost, ignorance. It'll come good
one day.
