Greetings - I recently purchases a Sony DVPNS305, having been assured by the salesman that it played everything.

I haven't opened it yet - wanted to do more homework. It can be returned.

What is the likelihood of this being multi-zoned? Does anyone know for sure? If it is not, is it possible to purchase a multi zoned player out of the box, or are modifications necessary on all players?

I'm relatively new to all this and searches haven't turned up anything definitive. I would be happy to be directed to a site with info - most of the ones I found are a bit out of date ...

Many thanks

Deb

Find out the model number, and search for it on VCD Help (http://www.vcdhelp.com)

Hi,

I'm pretty sure it is multizone, they relaxed the requirements now so I beleive all major manufacturers are releasing multizone DVD players. I also considered getting this player and if memory serves I recall it being sold as multizone at Sony Central in Melbourne City.

Ring up Sony Central and find out for certain if you like.

I looked up the specs on the Sony website but it didn't mention it.

Thanks

As long as the one you purchased has a wite sticker across the opening of the carton that states that the unit has been opened by Sony for quality assurance puposes, then it is definately all zone.

THANK YOU very much for your replies.

I rang Sony Central today and they said that all Sony's are multi zone now, but it won't be in the instructions, and it won't be on the box, for legal reasons. He assured me that the model I have purchased is multi-zone.

It does have the white sticker and I am very grateful for your help.

Thank you

Deb

I've got the very same Sony Deb, and it plays every R1 and R2 disc I through at it.

However. An RCE disc wont work. The SONY is 'region free' not 'multi-zoned' ... there is a difference:p

Great, thanks. I've done the RCE reading and I've just started on the multi-zone vs region free. As you all say, very complicated and confusing, but with your assistance in the terminology department I've been able to sort through a fair bit now.

I'll keep this Sony - I wanted a Sony mainly because I have two Sony flat screen TV's and a Sony video - not everyone's favourite brand, but they've always served me well ...

Thanks again

Deb

Hi,

You can't blame a company for not supporting piracy. But you can blame them for not supporting legal backup copies in the form of CD-R.

The older sony models did not support CD-R but the 305 I beleive does and it also supports mp3 if memory serves. They finally woke up and smelt the coffee on the CD-R and mp3 front.

I had a 336 model originally and it died about 13 months after I bought it, just outside the warrenty period, how nice :-(

I won't be buying a Sony DVD again, but maybe they have improved now.

Thanks

Sony wised up. As Mr Death pointed out, the new player has no trouble with any CDR. Plays SVCD, VCD, XVCD,mp3, DVD+rw, DVD-R and audio cds (wow, plays audio CD's!!!:D ).

(The old Sony players can play CD-RW's BTW)

There's plenty of players besides SONY that would have problems playing RCE DVDs. Luckily, the studios aren't getting on board with the new technology. They'd have lots of people returning DVD's if they did. Think of the number of Americans that have region 0 players. My understading is a RCE disc wont play on a player set to 'region free' (R0)... so all these Region 1 consumers would be very unhappy.

.

yep that is true.plus they would play princo, magnedata and anything else that was os a similar disc surface.

Good to hear sony have changed there ways.Apparenty it is a firmware thing that allows a dvd player to read cdr as you can update firmware of dvd roms to allow them to read more cdr if a player is haveing trouble with some.

Hey all,

Just a quick reply coz im in a hurry - but my flatmate has a Sony DVPNS305 and it plays at least some RCE disks, i have played The Sweetest Thing R1 in it, and it worked fine without any problems at all.
Attempting to play the same disk on my region free Sony DVPS735D wont work - (because i have just a firmware update region fix on it).

Rgds
