I have a Pioneer 107 and have just exhausted my supply of 2x Shintaro DVD-R
media so I just
went out and bought some 4x Shintaros. Now the Pioneer (or Nero) doesn't
seem to like
the Shintaro 4x. I keep getting "power calibration error" when trying to
write to the DVD.
Has anyone else had any problems using 4x Shintaros with the new Pioneer 107
drive ?

Thanks

Latest princo media is crap media. Have a look in this news group
where many have had falures using the latest princo media.

Try ritek or tdk media.

Amen. I just had 4/10 princos fail on me. Not impressed.

Byeeeee.

Try ritek or tdk media.

I've backed up 160 of my collection only using a 107 and only Princo discs. So far I've had about 4 discs with errors. The first 100 or so of the backups were with the original firmware on my drive 1.04 or 1.05 or something, and I had no disc errors, the 4 errors were after upgrading to 1.10 (not that I think that was the problem at all). The 3 types of Princos I've used are "RiMedia" (blue label, white text), "Princo" (white label, no text - blank), & "Princo" (white label with a fair bit of text and logos in black).
I've also had no problems playing them on the 3 brands of dvd player I've tried.

This is a worry... I have about 75 Princo's left to use up (purchased in the
past fortnight, so are presumably of the latest batch).

So far, been through about a dozen or so without any errors.
I usually burn using Nero and also let it verify the disc afterwards. Nero
reports no errors.

Since there has been comments regarding the quality of the Princo's, I've
been watching my copied discs, rather than the original and again, so far so
good. No errors.

I'm using 2 LG drives, usually burning at 2X.

Was wondering how your errors are manifesting themselves?

Its a real shame if the Princos are dropping their standards, the price
difference between the Princos and Riteks is not inconsiderable.

Cheers,

It was quite fascinating, they were the bottom 4 of a spindle of 10.
I theorise I got the top or tail end of a bad batch. ;-)

Start to burn (tmpgenc dvd writer), get about 1500 sectors in (of
about 2 million), spit the dummy, ejects the disc, coaster. Buy
slightly more expensive TEAC branded discs (as, at this stage I was
worried my drive may have been **&*ed), no problems at all.

Do you think software could play a role? Have you tried Nero, eg. with the
dodgy discs?

I don't believe it's software related. Flawless burning before the
dodgy 4, flawless burning after.

Post from www.overclockers.com.au - for info...
From Ambush: Current 4x DVD-R & 2x DVD-RW drives will be unable to use
<http://news.com.com/2100-1041-5174034.html> 4x DVD-RW discs and may also be
unable to use 8x DVD-R discs due to the sensitivity of the new dye to be
used. The media may be physically damaged and unreadable after burning.
Drives affected include the Pioneer DVR-AO6/106D & Sony DRU-510/DRX510UL
burners.

What does this have to do with 4x -r media?
4x -rw and 8x -r is going to need a firmware update like the a03/a04
drives of the past.

Latest princo media is only good for making drink coasters.
Princo media of about 1 year ago was good but not the latest batches.
Far to many people posting that they are getting failures when using
princo media.
