I noticed in a unit we own that the antenna/areal switch box used to convert
the tv signals to each unit converts the SBS signal from UHF to VHF so that
one needs to tune the signal to the same VHF band as ABC uses to be SBS. The
picture quality is perfect though.

Just wondering how does this affect SBS digital? If I purchase a digital Set
Top Box, will I still be able to get all SBS digital channels?

Interesting question. I think I read somewhere all the digital channels are
transmitted in the spare VHF bands but I could be wrong. Perhaps you could
borrow a friend's decorder box, plug it into your aerial socket and do a
"scan" and see what it finds.

Sounds like you have a MATV system in your units.

Go to DBA Main Page and in reception, there is some good advice on reception in units.

Yes, Digital is on the spare channels, 6, 8, 11, 12, 29, 36..... etc. Most MATV systems do not pass all of them through.

OR you could use a digital aerial (ch6-69) indoors like my son does in Bondi Junction: http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/adonai/LP345HV.jpg

Or buy one from Dick Smith - they have a money-back satisfaction guarantee,
try it and return it if it doesn't work out for you.

Could I ask a dumb question here?

Am I correct from my reading of this thread that digital is broadcast on VHF? I ask as I am considering purchasing a STB, but cannot get decent UHF at my place. I do, however, get excellent VHF.

Thanks

The DBA website has a "reception locator" (see
http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=22) which lets you select
your location then see the frequencies on which digital stations are
transmitting (and if they haven't started yet their expected start
date).

You don't say where you are, but for Sydney for example, the following
channels are used for the "main" digital transmissions (with repeaters
on other frequencies filling-in some black spots):

SEVEN: VHF 6
NINE: VHF 8
TEN: VHF 11
ABC: VHF 12
SBS: UHF 34

By contrast, in many regional centres, the digital transmissions are
_all_ on UHF, so really the DBA's "reception locator" - and maybe even
a post in the appropriate geographic forum on their website too to ask
other owners in your area - is going to be the best guide if you can't
borrow a STB overnight from somewhere and actually give it a go to be
certain.

Thanks Ted. I live in Sydney so should be OK. Whenever Foxtel get around to connecting me I will have SBS anyway!
