Went into my local Retravision store to have a little Captain Cook at
a digital setup to see if there had been any advances yet -- not many
apparently.....
However, I did notice that Channel 10 has set aside 9 frequencies for
future expansion of digital television (when they are allowed by this
repressive gov't to do so), SBS has a world news channel and all of
the five networks have an
EPG channel...........
How many channels are there in total on digital besides Channel 10
that have been allocated for future use ?!?!?
Also, how many so-called "Datacasting" channels are available in
Sydney on top of the frequencies reserved for the five existing
networks ?!?!?
TIA, peoples ;-)

I'm in Sydney and we can look at Sports Tab odds, the RTA traffic cams,
what's coming up at Darling Harbour and some ABC news screen.

Heres why FTA will not have multiple channels
(Small Population) / (No.of FTA channels + No. of Cable Channels)
Its all bout numbers

The small population argument doesn't work. NZ has more FTA than we do, but
they've got less people than Sydney. The population of a country only
determines the amount of money spent on local programming - assuming the
government doesn't force things. The number of FTA channels in a *licence
area* is determined by a) government regulation b) the population of that
area, c) the wealth of the area, and to a small extent d) the diversity of
interests within that area.
Similarly, the number of subscription channels has no bearing on the number
of FTA channels. The US, UK, Germany, etc have more subscription channels
than we do, and more FTA ones. In the US, "subscription" channels like MTV2
and Bloomberg broadcast FTA in some areas because there's a big enough
audience for advertising to support them. In the UK, Sky News is broadcast
FTA.

C'mon people. Get real.
Commercial TV is about one thing only for the owners.
Profit.
If there was money to be made in more channels then they would be in it in a
flash.
But. There isn't at this time.

Ten has only 1 channel for digital.
That's channel 11 VHF
They can run a number of SERVICES in that channel up to a
total data rate of 23 Mb/s. Each SD channel takes about 4 Mb/s
for reasonable quality and HD about 13 Mb/s minimum. You can see
that they can therefore run 1 HD and 2 or 3 other services.
If the set-top showed more than 4 channels then it has been re-scanned
a few times and the old services not deleted. Each time you scan it
adds new services to the previous list of services.

Each channel was allocated 1 channel.
channel 7 channel 6 for digital
channel 9 channel 8 for digital
channel 10 channel 11 for digital
channel 2 channel 12 for digital
channel 28 channel 34 for digital
(These are for Sydney but each capital is similar)

Only 1 datacasting channel is allocated (Channel 35....
To Broadcast Australia who call it "Digital 4" in Sydney)
The only other VHF channel channel 9A is not usable for digital TV
a it's not a 7Mhz channel and has been allocated for Digital Radio (DAB)
tests in Sydney and Melbourne. (15 radio channels in the "Eureka"
DAB system).

I live in Moruya, NSW and the ABC are using 9A for its Digital TV
transmission. Unfortunately this is the ONLY broadcaster using Digital as
Seven or Prime TV have had to shut down its transmissions on UHF Ch 58 due
to interference to other services.
I install TV antennas in this area and would love to see ALL the digital
services running here NOW. Keen to give people better TV (Even if the
content is shit)

Channel 9A is 7MHz wide provided there is no one broadcasting on the
old channel 10. Channel 10 & 11 were moved up 1MHz to make 9A the full
7MHz width.

It's more that the ABA isn't issuing the licences.
