View Full Version : Foxtel Digital + Dialup

A friend did some testing over the weekend, via the net (speedchecks) and
direct modem to modem transfers, and found that the effect of having the
return path phone line connector on the new Foxtel Digital STU across the
line, affects line speed by 6-8kbs.
Tested on 3 different phone lines in different locations...
Just a heads up for those with Foxtel and dialup.

You need to test with more than just one dialup modem, child.

Sorry, I should have been a little clearer, 3 different modems, 3 different
lines, 3 different locations.

You need to be very clear and precise for Rod - he finds it hard to
understand things these days, and you need to type very slowly as he can't
read very fast either..........
;-) Smile Rod - just a bit of harmless fun!!!!

All with the same result, line speed by 6-8kbs.

Mindless stuff. That doesnt happen.
Have fun explaining the MUCH greater variation
in the amount of copper and resistance in the line
from the phone socket to the exchange with different
customers that doesnt produce anything like that.

So when you dont see that with two modems on the
line, you're gunna have to do better than that, child.

Ummm, no. The addition of the extra line, provided it is installed correctly
should make bugger all difference.

Unfortunately, many people are reporting internet speed problems with the
STU attached. Disconnecting it usually fixes the problem. Plugging a
telephone or other device into the now vacant socket doesn't restore the
problem. The fault is clearly with the Foxtel STU.

Then it must have a pretty poor inbuilt modem

I have seen the same problem in the UK with Sky Digital boxes. It affects
some people more than others though, which suggests it's a problem with the
'phone wiring rather than something inherently wrong with the receiver.

I have heard similar problems with Austar equipment as well, even to the
extent that the internal modem wont release the line.

Its MUCH more likely to be the dialup modem
they are using than the phone wiring.
The very fundamental problem with the claim that
its the phone wiring is that there is VASTLY more
phone wire between the phone socket and the
exchange than there ever is around the house
and you dont get that much variation in the line
speed with such small variations in the phone
wiring between the socket and the exchange.
And you do certainly get some measurable
variation in the line speed with what other
devices are plugged into the phone line,
particularly with some dialup modems.
