View Full Version : Foxtel pitch riles video rental shops

As if Foxtel's $600million digital TV roll-out hasn't faced enough problems
, Australia's video stores are adding their voice to the melee.

The Australian Video Retailers Association has written to the Australian
Competition and Consumer Commission chairman, Graeme Samuel, complaining
about Foxtel's digital TV advertising campaign, and claims made by sales
staff.

AVRA, whose members include Civic Video, Top Leading Edge Video, and some
Video Ezy and Blockbuster stores, has taken issue with Foxtel's marketing
pitch, which implied digital subscribers can access new release movies at
the same time they hit video stores.

This is not the case, said AVRA executive director Ross Walden.

"There's a six month exclusivity period [for video stores] and Foxtel is
ignoring that window," Mr Walden said. "People deserve to know what they are
going to get for their entertainment dollar... but it seems that the Foxtel
storyline is pure Hollywood.".......

<SNIP>

.....Fortunately for Foxtel another row is currently cooling off with
subcontractors agreeing yesterday to end the nationwide strike they began
last Monday morning.

CEPU Victorian branch secretary Len Cooper said members would go back to
work, but would concentrate on migrating existing Foxtel customers from
analogue to digital, rather than connecting new subscribers.

He also said subcontractors were still frustrated because many people were
not at home when they arrived to do an installation, so they would no longer
travel to a job if, upon finishing their last job, a call to the next person
went unanswered.

Even at $0 for the two free FBOs I get this month, there is nothing to
watch.

Yes, I must agree, the content for FBO is currently very thin. Only one
movie that I'd bother to watch (Solaris), the rest, not interested or
have better versions on DVD (ala LotR: TT).

They will need to offer a broader selection if they want to entice
viewership.

I notice that "Pirates of the Caribbean" has just been released. I can BUY
the DVD from K-Mart for $25. Only 4X the price of a 1-night stand on FBO
and of course I get the two DVDs (film + all the extra goodies) + DTS 5.1
soundtrack. Presumably it will take another 6 months for this to arrive on
FBO.

If I had been a little more enterprising, I could have purchased Pirates
from Amazon before last Christmas for about the same price, delivered.

FBO has nothing to offer me.

Free? They're not free. You're paying $6.05 each for those.

I think the attentuation might be a bit too high and it's going to cost a
hell of a lot to drag that cable all the way over to the US. Why don't you
just get Cable TV when you move back to the states? ;-)

Even better - New Releases at my local Video Easy are $1.95 o/night at the
moment. That's a bit better than FBO!

Yeah, I've heard this line a few times now. It's all well and good if
you live in Hobart or Perth, or somewhere where the rent is so cheap
they can afford to do this, but our local video stores both charge
$7.50 per night for around 6 months after being released to DVD. Not
to mention if you bring back a DVD 2 minutes after it's due time, you
get fined a full $7.50 again. There is nothing I can do to change
this price or service, and it's no longer convenient if I have to
drive for 10+ minutes to find a crappy small store that charges $2
less. So I'm currently left only renting DVD's when I'm desperate to
watch a movie.

FBO won't be filling this spot for me just yet. But with a discounted
price and a slightly better range of movies it would be good
competition.

And don't worry I won't be crying if either the Blockbuster or Video
Ezy near me go broke trying to compete with FBO in the future.
