An agreement between the Seven Network and SBS will bring the Olympic
football tournament into Australian homes in August.
Seven, Australia's official broadcaster of both the Summer and
Winter Games, has agreed to a deal allowing SBS to supplement the network's
coverage of the Athens Games by telecasting events which Seven is unable to
cover fully.
While the exact details of those sports and the broadcast
schedule itself are yet to be finalized, SBS will provide extensive coverage
of all Olympic soccer matches, including both the men's and women's finals.
Meanwhile Seven will retain exclusive rights to the
highest-profile sports - track and field, swimming, rowing, cycling and
gymnastics - as well as the opening and closing ceremonies and many of the
sports and events featuring Australians.
It is also likely that SBS will offer fans of volleyball,
handball and the like the opportunity to watch those sports.
In 2000, Seven's free-to-air coverage of the Sydney Games was
supplemented by two pay-television channels through the C7 service, however
this is the first time that two free-to-air networks will broadcast the same
Olympics.
Both Seven and SBS will provide more than 15 hours of coverage
on each of the 16 days of competition, from 3.30pm AEST until 7am.
