I did the audio, but the problems were only just starting. Now I'm getting errors in the video stream when I try to re-compress...I found one error in DivFix, which it cut out, but VirtualDubMod is still stalling about a quarter of the way through the avi with a critical exception error! Anyone out there got any ideas???
nasssty: re the VBR audio, which encoder are you using? PM me, cause I think we're kinda getting off topic here :)

Try the program "Videofixer", it is doing its job fine (the best I think). I copied DivX files from corrupted CD's (with ISObuster) so there were missing blocks + damaged index. Videofixer corrects such files and they become playable. However, make a direct copy with A/V interleaving in VirtualDub after Videofixer. Needless to say that files become non-searchable in direct stream mode but they should be fine if you are doing A/V re-encoding.

thanks buts, I'll try videofixer when I get home from...erm...work - DOH! I gave it away again ;)
Just to get this straight: are you saying to 1st fix the file, 2nd do a direct stream copy of the video, 3rd re-encode that direct stream copy using full processing (with audio added in)?

Yes, Videofixer doesn't fix a problem of incorrect file length and you need
to make a direct stream with VirtualDub to fix it. I usually compress
audio separately with Lame 3.95 before virtualdub to avoid synchro problems. Then I only do multiplexing in VirtualDub (and video encoding, if necessary).

okay, I tried again last night, and got same problem when I got to the re-encode video step: VirtualDubMod crashed with an error message - some sort of violation in xvid.dll". I'm not sure whether it was a problem in decoding the movie or something caused by VirtualDub itself.
Anyway, I sold out... loaded up the same fixed file in Dr Divx and it worked like a charm, I'm sorry to say :I Nasssty, you may be interested in this because Dr Divx is a simple alternative for re-encoding (select source, select home theatre mode and go), and no dramas with VBR - the finished re-encode has no sync issues, and most importantly, plays perfectly now in the 888! Only problem is that you have to pay for it :(

How did the re-encode turn out?
Identical image and sound quality, or was there a noticeable drop?
Im a real picky bastard when it comes to image and sound faults, but im giving it a go through Dr Divx now.

Re-encode looked fine to me, although it doesn't sound like I'm as picky as you :) Undoubtedly there would have been some drop in quality (like photocopying a photocopy), it would have been the same story in VirtualDub or any other encoder for that matter, unavoidable if you want to get rid of the GMC.

But I'm buggered if I can notice the difference. Looks and sounds as good as the original to me. And it plays on the xms, unlike the original. Can't get too picky if you got the movie for nothing in the first place :P
