Hey . The ROBOTECH boxset 1 was released yesterday and I must say I'm pretty happy with it.
I had volume 1 of the R1 release, and the R4 discs appear to be pretty much identical. The only noticable difference so far has been the different menus. The R4 is nicer IMO. Neither are anything to get excited about of course.
I also think the PAL video quality is better than the NTSC. Could be my imagination but hey! :D The video quality overall is still pretty poor thanks to the source material, but its Robotech and it looks as great as its likely to eva look.
Madman was smart enough to keep the great DVD cover art, though they seemed to have chosen the worlds cheapest amaray cases (what's with the DVD distributors these days? What happened to good amaray cases!) . The three DVD's sit in a nice blue slip case. Cardboard as usual, but a lot stronger than the LOTR:Ext.Ed cardboard slipcase. And at least if it rips there are 3 individual amaray cases.
The content? Pretty good. 12 episodes over two discs and one disc of extras (which I've yet to look over, sorry). Sure beats the old '2 episods a DVD' mentality. And I'm loving it. Even if you've never seen Robotech, it's amazing how well the series has stood the test of time. Sure, there are lots of cringe moments, but it remains a great sci-fi saga, one that I'd recommend to anyone who appreciates a good story. If you've got kids, it's also a good opportunity to ween them off that Dragonball Z crap.
Just in case you don't know... this boxset is the first of three that will make up the 'Macross Saga' - the first and best installment of Robotech. So if you're after the whole Macross saga, you'll need to buy the 3 R4 boxsets (3x $55)
What other Robotech 'Macross' choices do I have?
Well there's the R1 'Complete Macross Saga Collection' (USD $55). Works out cheaper than buying the seperate R4 boxsets but there's no extras discs. I'd stick with the R4.
Animego's 'Macross DVD Boxsets' -best of the best. The original Japanese Macross episodes with new subtitles. Totally remastered, cleaned up and beautiful. At about $225 USD ($404 AUD) for the 3 boxsets, you'd want to really really love your oldschool anime :D
Go get the Robotech DVD Boxset, and check out the Toynami figures at your local EB or comics store.
Avoid the new videogame 'Robotech Battlecry" (XBOX, PS2, GCN) as it sucks major ass!!:p (well I played it on my mates XBOX and I don't plan to do so again... and I'm a fan!!)
