FOXTEL Digital and Sky News Australia launch the Parliamentary Channel

FOXTEL Digital subscribers will now have a direct window into the workings and decision-making processes of Federal Parliament with the launch of the Parliamentary Channel on Sky News Australia’s ground-breaking interactive news service Sky News Active.

FOXTEL and Sky News Australia additionally announced the launch of the Election Channel, which will provide comprehensive coverage of the next Federal election once an election date has been set.

The Parliamentary Channel was launched in Canberra tonight by the Prime Minister, the Hon. John Howard, MP and will revolutionise parliamentary reporting in Australia.

Operating throughout parliamentary sitting periods, the Parliamentary Channel will broadcast live coverage from the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as Committee proceedings of national interest and major press conferences.

The Parliamentary Channel will be available as one of the eight screens on Sky News Active, the interactive news service that allows FOXTEL Digital subscribers to choose the news services they want to watch, when they want to watch it, 24-hours a day.

FOXTEL’s Chief Executive Kim Williams said: “Sky News Active and the Parliamentary Channel are innovations that will truly change the way Australians are informed about the news events that affect their lives. Sky News Active has elevated Australian television reporting to a completely new dimension”.

“The Parliamentary Channel celebrates the importance of the Commonwealth Parliament and will make a unique and growing contribution to political reporting in our nation, especially in this election year.”

Sky News Australia’s Managing Editor, Angelos Frangopoulos, said: “The Parliamentary Channel on Sky News Active is a hugely exciting innovation for Sky News Australia and opens a vital new window on Canberra to the nation”.

“The Parliamentary Channel will give an unbiased view of the workings and processes of Federal Parliament and will follow similar high global standards set for parliamentary reporting by the C-Span network in the United States and the BBC’s Parliament Channel in the UK.

“From the House of Representatives to the Senate, Committee to Committee and all the major press conferences, the Parliamentary Channel will be there as the stories develop.

“The Election Channel will further demonstrate the unrivalled capacity of Sky News Active to break stories when they happen, as they happen.”

Sky News Active is available exclusively on Sky News Australia, Australia’s only 24-hour news channel.

Sky News Active offers eight simultaneous screens of video content covering various news genres sourced from Sky News Australia’s own team of journalists as well as other local and international news bureaus.

The service allows viewers, via their FOXTEL digital remote, to in turn choose a single news genre, such as business or sport, by pressing a button on the remote and selecting that video and audio feed. This action gives them a larger view of the chosen video screen, coupled with related text headlines leading to text stories at the touch of the “select” button on the remote control.

Sky News Australia is Australia’s locally-produced news channel. An essential and fast-growing part of Australia’s media landscape for the past eight years, Sky News Australia is at the forefront of cutting-edge newsroom editing technology, enabling the processing of information faster than any other television newsroom in the country.

The Sky News Active service and the Parliamentary Channel will be available to all FOXTEL Digital subscribers as part of the basic service provided to each subscriber, which also includes news channel services CNN, BBC World, Bloomberg, CNBC, and FOX News.

I get the impression that Matthew Harison has nothing to offer to this
newsgroup other thank his sarcasim to other posters and trying to be
humourous with his cryptic replies.

Alternative: Check out any of the 7 Parliamentary channels, available free
24/7 on either broadband or narrowband internet, from
http://www.aph.gov.au/live/webcast1.asp

That's 5 more channels than the Foxtel offer - without the hype.

Whatever. Having the parliament channel is an extra bonus whether you watch it or not.

Paying the same price as you normally would (without the P Channel), you are getting an extra stooge displayed on your NewsActive window, which by the way, needs a massive remodification.

If I was the Foxtel CEO, i would make Foxtel the best thing since sliced bread...

But too bad, eh!
