I like the idea of raising the speakers to just over ear height.
Speakers on the floor don't seem to give the same effect as when they're raised, especially if they're those tiny ones that seem to be all the rage these days.
Wall mounted is the best way to go, as then there's still floor space, and there's less clutter, but for those renting, I can understand the obvious problems with drilling holes in somebody else's walls! The other advantage with wall mounting is that the wiring can be placed inside the roof cavity, and come out from the ceiling, which tidies things up a bit.
Still, I used milk crates for my surrounds for years, and they doubled up as bookshelves to boot!
But having said all this, if you have nothing else but an old shoebox to put your speakers on, go to it!:D

Bigger front speakers are more effective if they are on the floor. Its pretty good for surounds to be raised as to increase their effect. Fronts should always be on the floor, the rest can be raised or angled anyway you like.

Bigger speakers do not need to be on the stands. The tweeters need to be at the same level as ears. The surrending speakers normally need to be raised with this theory, as well as they do look better with stands if they are not that tall. I use three stands for the Rear L.R. and Rear C. I got mine from Cabramatta HiFi. I think there were under two hundred bucks each. The quality is high for what they are (after market), they are very heavy and solid. Adequate for my B&W 602s and the rubbish on top of them. Had a hard time to convince them to sell me 3 instead of 2 pairs.:)

A friend of mine has some of the Solidsteel speaker stands that International Dynamics distributes. Click on the solidsteel link to view their product range. They are of excellent quality.
