have you tried formatting it in either a card reader or connected through a PC
card adapter in a laptop? might be worth a try..

Before you do that, if you want to try to recover anything, try
PhotoRescue (http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/). It costs $US29,
which is a bargain if it recovers priceless photos that would otherwise
have been lost. You can download a free trial.
There is also "Data Image Recovery" .. (can't remember the link) that
appears to be pretty good and is free).
To answer the question, I suspect it's the camera .. i've had a lot of
friends with similar issues and they all use Canon .. I don't, however,
think it happens very often though.

Could be just an I-O error.

I'm unsure of the relevance to the post .. however you're incorrect. I do
*own* a Nikon D100.. however I *use* a Fuji S1.

I think his post was as relevant as your mention of Canon cameras in
your previous post! CF cards can and do fail, that's a fact! Whether
card failure has anything to do with the make and model of camera
would depend on each individual case - your mention of Canon cameras
seemed to indicate that the cameras were somehow at fault. I think
that was the guy's point.
What if all four cards failed because THEY were manufactured by the
same company (even if rebadged for sale), or what if they were misused
in a similar way, or what if it was JUST PURE BAD LUCK (and
statistically insignificant considering the thousands of CF cards and
cameras sold), ...or what if... ... you get the point, right?

Rudi

We know that - do you think that a smilley would have been appropriate
so you would understand the comment.

Thanks for all the comments, but at the end of the day I don't think I
got an answer?
is it more likely to be a fault in the card or a fault in my camera?
Which is MORE likely

I'd put my money on the card being faulty over the camera. Perhaps even a
format in the PC will fix it.
What brand is the card by the way?

...which would place the camera at fault if it could be formatted away from the
camera.
My moneys on there being a file allocation error on the drive which could be
easily fixed by formatting it outside the camera.

So if you put another card in the camera and the camera works with another
card, which was faulty :-P ??
