Possible?
Not without doing some serious hacking that will probably break your player if you put one byte in the wrong spot.... :(
(other than that, you can turn it on and off if you like :D )

Patcher should be able to change the Screensaver (SPU) image.
The latest version is Patcher 2.2. Get it here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mipsx_src/files/Utilities/Patcher/
After you start Patcher, use the "SPU Scanner/Viewer" then scan each of the selections in the "Firmware ROM/RAM segment" pull down menu.
For V1.2, the SPUs are stored in RAM 0x170000-0x1D5360. The second image (DVD oval) is the screensaver SPU.
Be careful if you decide to patch as no one has tested this Patcher version with the XMS firmware. You take full responsibility should your update fail (but you'll also get full credit if it works!). I would not flash update without a method to recover (reprogram) the firmware chip. You have been warned!

Skaman is correct, it is 'doable', and has been done on other ESS based players (like the Yamada DVX-6100).
However, as he says, you would want to be very careful, because as yet no-one has been game to try it on the XMS (that I know of anyway).
It would be a sad day if you killed your player just to change the screensaver picture.

I forgot to mention that you'll need the BMP2SPU program to create a replacement SPU.
The EZPatch Yahoo Group contains the program:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ezpatch/files/Supplemental%20Utilities/
You'll also find some related SPU stuff in there.
