Have you tried a different region disc as yet, I've done a quick search, and a lot of the sites selling this model list it as 'region free'. (Others make no mention of region free).
Otherwise, you could try the distributor, they might be able to tell you.

All current model Sony DVD players are supplied to retailers pre modded to all zone. You may have noticed a white sticker over the seal on the box that said that the unit had been opened for quality assurance testing, this is placed on the carton after they are set to all zone at the warehouse.
