Lay-buy on phones

I was wondering if it's possible to put a lay-buy on mobile phones? I lost my phone a couple of months back and want to get a new one but haven't got all the cash for it yet...so I'd like to pay it off cause I don't want to go on a plan...so is it possible or is there any other similar way?

Just asked my partner who works for one of the big phone companies and in a word.. NO. They do not do laybys

They do if you are buying a pre paid mobile (at kmart target etc.)
