View Full Version : Site news and updates
An additional hard drive has been installed into the web server. Affecting from today, the storage quota for eyo Gallery has been increased to 5MB each user.
Web site was down for one hour this morning. It came back just before 9am.
The web server decided to lock up in a Sunday morning.:(
To prevent this happening again. I have:
Replace the gigabits NIC (64bit PCI now:))
Replace the PSU with a 530w PSU
Reduced RAM (2GB to 1GB), in case the Tyan motherboard does not like 4 RAM slots to be used at the same time. I have started to wonder the Tyan board may have a memory related problem.
As you may or may not have noticed. An Arcade Area has been created. You can play arcade games in it as well as have your score displayed under your name.

The status for it is only installed with 5 minutes of test, so problems can be expected.
Before someone asks will there be more games other than the 4 currently available, the answer is yes. More games will be added soon.
Enjoy!
PS, I would like to claim my championship for once with the Tetris.:)

Our network was disconnected from the internet for over 2 hours last night after midnight due to a "planned, yet not adviced ISP outage".:(
So if you could not access to our web sites, you were not alone. A back up link will be put into place soon.
I will need to power down the database server to upgrade the memory at 5:45PM. It should be a straight forward task. We should be back a few minutes later. I always think and say this way. :)
Has it surprised me? no. I said a few minutes, it has ended up being 45 minutes.
Put the new RAM in, the server won't even boot. Finally found other RAM which work with the server. The next thing I heard was beeping sound coming from the RAID controller. I said noooooo, yet it did. One of the hard drive on the RAID 5 array failed during the power down and up. It refuses to spin up anymore.:(
The server is now working on the remaining drives on the RAID5 system. Thanks for the RAID system, we are still on line.:)
I will need to reschedule a outage after getting a new hard drive. That should (I really do hope so) only take about 1/2 hour to rebuilt the RAID system.

Doesn't RAID 5 rebuild in real time??
BTW interesting stuff for the more technologically minded here ;)

Software RAID can be built in real time.
Hardware RAID can be built under an utility running under Windows for this card, or rebuilt at the BIOS level. As the server is not running Windows, the only way is to rebuild the RAID at BIOS level.
A RAID 5 system with a "hot spare" hard drive installed prior to the failure will be rebuilt in real time automatically by the controller. Unfortunately we did not have a hot spare drive.
I may be able to switch the web site to the slave server when the master server is rebuilt.:)
Phew, we are finally back on line.
An earlier attempt to switch to the slave database server while the master server was getting rebuilt did not go as smooth as I hoped. I had to shutdown the database server to rebuild the RAID system. I predicted 30 minutes to rebuild. Boy, it took 2.5 hours to rebuilt the RAID! gee, we are talking about 15,000RPM SCSI drives here.:)
Anyway, we are back on line with a full functioning RAID 5 system.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I have added an extra field under your profile for gender. Please go and fill it out to save/create the confusion:).

Right down the bottom is the Gender Option.(not that you have that option)
WYSIWYG toolbar has been disabled temporarily.
They will be enabled again when the forum software is upgraded.
We have been on our backup link since yesterday morning. If you have found the web site slow and/or having other weird behavours, that is the reason. Our ISP Swiftel can not be reached on the weekend making it more frustrate. So much for a 99.9% up time link.
Our electrical meters will be replaced after 5pm this afternoon.
I think we will need to shutdown all the servers for about 20 minutes. So don't freak out if you find Eyo disappears from your sight. No need to leave far, play some XBox games and see if you can be the first one back on board.

Sorry to disappoint those people who waited for the web site to disappear. The UPSes managed to keep the servers running during the black out. :D
I am going to upgrade the database software in a few minutes. You will see lots of errors on your screen. There will be no need to reboot your PC/Mac/Mobile phone. :)
One of the database servers stopped responding this morning around 11am. I remotely switched over to another database server thinking aren't we lucky we are back on line. The second server decided it's not fair for a Sunday, and chucked a fit around 2:50pm too. I think they just like to ruin my Sunday afternoon to get me making the trip on site.
I think today's heat in Sydeny would have contributed to the server strike.
We need to shutdown all servers and relocate them. A brief downtime of a few minutes will be experienced. :)
Who would have thought a server can refuse to boot after shutting it down? Next time I will type nice things to the server before shutting it down. :)
A gigabit network card turned bad around 15:10 brought down most of our network. Everything was back to normal around 15:30 after a new card was installed.
We are having problem with our up link network. That has caused a few users receiving repeated emails. We have identified the cause of the problem. It is within our up link network. We are trying to talk to the ISP.
