Hi,

Does anyone know where HomeScreen (homescreen.com.au) DVD rental service is
located? I am just interested in terms of postal times.

From their website:

http://www.homescreen.com.au/docs/about/
HomeScreen's offices are in Sydney, NSW and it operates fulfillment
centres in Sydney, NSW and Adelaide, SA, with further fulfillment
centres coming soon.

I assume that means that Sydney looks after East Coast and Adelaide
looks after Central/West...

I'm in Wollongong, and usuallly anything sent from Sydney should arrive the
next day. However, HomeScreen which sends from Sydney was taking 2 days each
way. I've found Meteor and FetchMeMovies the best so far.

I'm in Melbourne and it comes from a PO box in Sunshine. Only been with
them a couple of weeks. It's 50/50 next day/day after.

Thanks for that ... have used 'Fetch' for the last couple of months out of
Melbourne ... but in recent weeks they have become a little tardy with
shipping new discs.

How long is the homescreen trial for?

I recall 2 weeks being mentioned on their website.

Best you have a look to confirm.

nice, thanks. I'm in the US but coming home soon, and have been a huge fan
of Netflix, where you pay 20 bucks per month and get 3 dvds at a time. As
soon as you send one back, you get another. So you can get through quite a
few in a month!
Seems the Oz ones are quite a bit pricier. Seems that 8.50 is the going
rate...weekly. A tad expensive.
Pity, this method is amazingly convenient.

Yeah I'm using Webflicks now after trying Fetch - Webflicks seem quicker,
but with a long weekend..... send back on Wed/Thu, receive on Tues/Wed if
you're lucky!

Why can't online stores and the post work (long) weekends!?!? I've even had
to resort to going to my local store - arghh how old school!!

Would be nice. I'd even be happy with Saturday deliveries like in the US.

Thanks for your website link Jason.

I wonder why the sudden proliferation web based DVD rental services (in the
last 12 months) given Webflicks opened 6 years ago?

Are anymore web based DVD rental services due to open in the near future, or
have we reached saturation point?

I haven't heard of any new ones in the making, I guess they have a lot to
compete with now. I think that there will probably be more consolidation -
the 2000-4000 title places can't stay around long when the 8000ers set up
distribution centres in every capital city. Webflicks sold their system to
Tel$tra and now have to compete with them (maybe they get an ongoing
commision in the deal?), I can't see there being much room for more than a
couple of companies for each city/state?

Hopefully there will be enough competition that we can see some price drops
or some really standout features, but at the moment I think location and
number of titles are the defining factors of which is best for you...

The Location comments are funny. I'm in Vermont, and Netflix are in
California. I could send a DVD back on monday, and have the new one in my
mitts the same week. I'd get an email saying it was coming saturday, and I'd
have it Friday, without fail.

Ahh ... I thought the layout and contents of Webflicks pages and Fetch's
pages were very similar!

I heard that HomeSceen is sponsoring the Funniest Home Video Show (ch.9) ,
which will no doubt dramatically increase the number people exposed to web
based rentals for the first time.

Does anyone know what the Web Rental outlets do with their excess rental
stock? Are they available to buy?

Yeah some of them have for sale pages and others have comments in their FAQ
like 'in the future we will be incorporating a purchase facility'. Which I
guess means they'll wait a while longer before retiring discs. I suppose
they'll get enough of a customer base, collate some stats on what gets
rented for how long and sell off the dead wood after that. I'm sure there's
a lot of high demand new release movies that are quickly forgotten about...

Thanks for that Jason,

I noticed you occasionally put a Webflicks URL at the bottom of your posts;

DVD Rentals online: http://webflicks.com.au/?u=47905

Is this a referral promo, and if so, what does it entitle you to?

Secondly, I noticed a number of the sites have an area to insert a promotion
code. What does this offer a new user over and above the free trial period?
and where does one get such a code?

Cheers,

Ash

Yep, that's my referral link. For Webflicks, you get $10 for anyone who
signs up after clicking your link (after their first paid month). Rather
than take it off your bill, they just accrue referral earnings until you hit
$50, then they send you a cheque.

Good question! I'm not sure - any else seen any promotions?

[I work for HomeScreen] You should be seeing turnaround a little faster than that from our Sydney warehouse. Sometimes a title will need to be sent from our Melbourne or Adelaide warehouse if that's where the closest copy is, and that may be a 2 day trip occasionally, but it will always be going back to our Sydney warehouse, so that should be overnight.

Let us know if it continues to be a problem.

Hi Alan, just wondering how the multi distribution centre system works...
are the Melb/Adl warehouses for Homescreen only, or do you share titles with
other companies? It seems strange to be sending from Melb/Adl then
returning to Sydney?

Jason,

Mmm...that doesn't sound like a bad deal ... have you had much success in
this regard? I noticed you have cleverly incorporated the link into your
comparison page .. good thinking!
