After setting up a surround sound system I discovered my cd's did not feed
the side speakers. Is it true that in order to gain this feature (true
surround sound) I need to buy dvd music disks. In which case how do I ID
these disks on a shop shelf. Do they have an identifying logo?
thanks

Most CDs are just stereo - ie just front L/R. To get sound out of surround
speakers, your amp may be set to duplicate the stereo field for the
rears/sides, or you could use Pro Logic I/II or Neo6 processing to take some
of the 'out of phase' sound (reverbs, echo etc) and send that to the rears
for a fake surround effect. Also the DSP (digital signal processing) modes
such as rock, hall, jazz or whatever may put a bit of noise into the
sides/rears. Generally I just prefer stereo being duplicated - anything
else is just a distortion!
If you actually want properly encoded surround audio CDs, they exist but are
rare in shops... www.cdpacific.com have a few. Some are Dolby Digital/AC-3
and a few are DTS encoded.
I have tried Midnight Oil's Capricornia which sounds great as a 6.1 discrete
DTS-ES Audio CD. Check that your amp handles DTS sound before getting one
like that though because there are no other audio options...

Audio CD... unusual eh?
I've put a 150KB cover scan up here: http://gadgetaus.com/oils.jpg
Note that 5.1 is on the front and 6.1 on the back... they screwed that up.
Guess the cover artist didn't know what he/she was doing! It is 6.1
discrete...
