Gaia- MGS-2 is coming out on Xbox in a month or so. If you like that style of game, I suggest you take a squiz at the newly released Splinter Cell.
Personally I would get a Xbox, for someone into Home Theatre you can't go past the 5.1 sound.
While not criticsing the PS2, it's a bit dated now. It's also more expensive than the Xbox which is unbelievable IMO.
One of the big features of the PS2 is it's library of games, however this will start to fade as the XBox has more titles released for it in the future.
as for region free: The PS2 can be made to play region free with a widely available boot-disc, or with a hardware mod.
The Xbox is region free out of the box, the first time you use the offical DVD remote it sets the region. Theoretically you could import a US remote and use that, although I would just have the XBox modded. There are numerous mods available from about $50. It is also possible to put a larger Hard-drive in.
Note that with mods, some don't work with the new X-Boxs as MIcrosoft tried to make it harder to do. All the older Boxes can be modifed easily, and numerous people will do it for you, or you can buy the mod over the net and do it yourself.
Do a bit more research before you buy either I'd advise:
try a few forums....

all depends also what you are looking for. My PS2 is a dedicated games machine... The only time I will use it for DVDs is when I go on holidays, so I can watch DVDs in the cabin.

G'day
PS2 was being sold under $300 at Kmart in Melbourne this week. Definately the more established console. Gran Turismo is great. X-box massive pack can be had for about $395 though, which is a good deal.
One Thing to consider before purchasing either.
Do you have a dolby digital sound system? If so get an X-box, the sound through this set up is awesome.

I think i will end up with a PS2 unless someone can change my mind and give a good reason to go for the X-Box

Wave Race 64 rules... fav all time game.... got the N64 and one controller, plus that game, just in case I feel the need!! Otherwise the N64 would be long gone.

It really is a personal preference.
I'm still a bit annoyed w/ the N64 and all the lack of games for grown up kids. Altho Wave Race 64 & GoldenEye are still 2 of my favourite games ever made.
No denying Final Fantasy will sell consoles. I didn't think I would like these games, but got FFVIII when I got my original PSX. Havent looked back, including collecting the old SNES ports on to PSX. I miss the SNES days.
I wouldn't buy a PS2 just for GT3 though. I'm rather passed this game now....

why ? With the price of a Gamecube nowadays (they have been seen for $99! That's less than the price of a new game) sure there aren't many games for it, no s-video. BUT it does have some solid titles.

Are you sure no s-video?? If it doesn't have s-video, then that should seal it's fate. Composite is poor in this day and age.

Why not get a Gamecube?
Metroid Prime
Zelda
Eternal Darkness
Resident Evil
Mario Tennis/Golf
Mario Sunshine
Mario 128
Mario Party
Soul Calibur 2
Ikaruga
Splinter Cell
Burnout 2
Animal Crossing
Metal Gear Solid is also coming to GC
as well as Grand Theft Auto
It is less ugly looking than the PS2, a lot smaller than PS2 and Xbox, and a lot cheaper. Easy to play NTSC games (with freeloader).

Why not Gamecube?
Xbox has better graphics in general, can play dvds and is easily modified to backup your games.

There's some good points there, I'm just saying that Gamecube isn't THAT bad, and shouldn't be completely forgotten when you're choosing a console to buy!

I think size wasnt a consideration when i bought my x box. Also the advantage of doubling as a dvd player (region free aswell with the help of a chip) and the fact i can load all my games onto the hard drive so im never looking for cds has firmly made my mind up that i never made a wrong decision in consoles to buy.
Yes it is a shame that we will miss out on some of those mario bros games. but i think other than those most games will be multi platform eventually (sorta like rental windows for dvds).
Was great news that vice city etc will be available on xbox :).

Sometime next year I think. (GTA coming out on Xbox and Gamecube.)

Sony's stranglehold on the GTA series dosn't end till the end of 2004, by then vice city won't be worth releasing.
Besides, I'd be shocked if sony dosn't sign them again. Rockstar made 2 of the best selling games across all platforms with GTA and GTA - VC.

I heard March next year .Read it on the front page of xbox scene a week ago or so.

ok, I was still going on info I heard months ago. Still, march next year? will make the game almost 2 years old, I don't like its chances.
Thats almost like releasing Grand turismo 1 into the market now. :D
Like I said though, I'd be surprised if sony didn't buy exclusive rights for their new games when the current contract ends.
As for nintendo releasing nintendo games on other systems, I only see this happening if they completely drop out of the console market, and the way japan think anything nintendo touch turns to gold, I dodn't see it happenng.
