Hey guys,

I wanted to ask a few questions of you all concerning my current A/V setup.

I'm using:

GRUNDIG XENTIA 82CM Wide & Flat Screen Television as my display
NAD T760 Surround Sound Receiver
ONKYO DV-S535 DVD Player

I didn't actually set up or organize the whole thing, I got a home cinema designer to do it for me (at the time I wasn't into this stuff). He ran the DVD Player, VCR and FOXTEL STU (soon to be Digital) through the receiver using only analogue RCAs (composite - Yellow, Red & White) to connect them to the receiver. He then ran a single Composite>SCART from the receiver to the televisions SCART input.

The receiver has provisions for S-Video input as well, but for some reason he used composite. At the same time the DVD player has component output. Obviously the receiver has no component inputs but could you run a component to SCART directly into the television, then run only audio to the receiver.

As well he used analogue audio from the DVD player - not coaxial or optical.

ONE THING I DIDN'T SAY: I only have a three speaker setup. One CANTON center & wall mounted CANTON L & Rs. Therefore the receiver uses Dolby Pro-Logic not 5.1 nor DTS.

Here are my questions:--

1. Whats the best way to achieve maximum image quality from my DVD player to my TV seeing my TV has scart input. Or shall I use S-Video from my player to the receiver???Or....?

2. For audio should I keep using analogue for my DVD player seeing I only have a three speaker setup. Or shall I use a coaxial cable from my DVD to my receiver. Will this give me grater audio quality or offer me DTS understanding my speaker setup.

I know this whole thing seems a bit strange but I'm trying to get more out of the system before I put in a sub and rears (roof mounted rears are gonna cost a hell of a lot in the room).

Thank you so much to all that answer me. Its greatly appreciated!

Cant wait to hear from you all soon,
All the best,

fixler.

Run Svideo from your Foxtel STB (I use a simple Composite>Svideo converter
plug) VCR and DVD player, this way you only use one input on your TV. Then I
would also connect your DVD player directly to the TV using either Component
or SCART RGB for the best possible connection when playing DVDs.

Use a Dig Coax cable and just use your receiver's/DVD player
'pseudo-surround' mode, or plain vanilla stereo, to get the most out of your
3 speakers and have proper DTS/DD decoding. Better yet just buy yourself 2
extra speakers.

I am not familiar with the products you are using, but

If your TV has a component input then use it directly from the DVD
player. I don't think the Fox STU has component, but if you ever get
another device with component then you can switch that through the amp
if it is capable of doing so (and your appears to not be able to).
Using component will give the best results.

Does the NAD have digital inputs?, if yes then a digital connection is
the way to go, especially if you want 5.1. If not then you are out of
luck and will have to remian with line level inputs.
As to using coax or optical, this will depend on your amps configuration
and the components. Most that I have seen will have optical inputs with
one token coaxial input. I have seen debates as to which is the best
and some say coax while others say there is no difference, best to try
them both and let _your_ ears tell you.

Sorry to hear about the work the isntaller did for you, IMO he should
have spoken to you about this and explained why he chose the low road
for you

GRUNDIG XENTIA 82CM. Cool TV. I have one too.

Component to scart is OK but not sure how much more better or even
cost. I'd use s-video to the s-video or to the scart. I did see a
scart to component at JB HiFi but not a component to scart. I was
going to buy and see the diff.

Use the digital AND analogue for sound and switch according to
recording or your ear taste. My pref, CD are OK analogue but DVD are
gr8 digital.

Ohh and trash the account, get the sub & rears
