Why is this dual tuner only SD instead of HD?

Is it true that software is the main difference between SD & HD? If so wont
SD disappear & HD decrease in price sometime soon?

Is my Bigpond posts showing up for anyone...grr...
Anyway, as I said:
Not a chance in hell!
This is the main chipset for the Topfield TF5000PVRt:
http://www.necel.com/digital_av/english/mpegdec/d61130a.html

This is hardware, and only does MP@ML, you would need a different chipset
for HD, no little bit of software is going to change this. Sure, with PC
capture cards it is simple a bit of software that makes the difference
between HD and SD, but PC capture cards are really tuners that send the
digital stream off to your PCI bus, and your poor 2-3Ghz CPU has to do all
the hard work into turning that into an image. STBs don't have 3Ghz CPUs,
that would be crazy (all the heat generated etc). They have dedicated
processors that therefore restrict their usage.

Now here is the newer NEC chipset for HD:
http://www.necel.com/digital_av/english/mpegdec/d61160.html
This may be what is hiding away in the new dual tuner HD box that Topfield
have promised will be out soon.

The big problem with HD for Australia is despite us choosing a good
technical standard for HD (and SD) the only other place in the world heavily
into HD is the US and the standard is quite a bit different. So unlike
with SD, where many countries around the world are DVB-T(and S) SD, with a
box that only needs a little tweaking for our environment, there is only
really one market that is huge with HD, and there really isn't any simple
way of tweaking the boxes used in that market to be used in Australia. So
all our HD boxes here are quite specific to Aussie land, hence their
rediculous price.
Cheers

Thanks Tony for explaining the high Australian HD decoder price.

What about European & Asian HD ... all different or just awakening?
