I have a 142cm rear projection sony tv and I use my xbox to watch DVD's. I just popped on Star Wars Attack of the Clones and I can see little wavy lines on the screen.

I was wondering if buying a decent DVD player would improve the picture quality or is the xbox a competent DVD player as is?

AFAIK the xbox is a decent DVD player. Ive played some divx and some dvds through mine and it shows the same quality pic imo.

Tried other DVDs? Do these lines appear at all during gaming? Checked your xbox settings to make sure it is all ok (eg. progressive output on/off, color format set to auto)?
Id suggest you list all settings your not sure of (first look in the manual).

I think if you're running the video cable through a VCR the picture comes out bad. It does it to me too and its stupid and annoying. To fix it you have to plug the video cable of the Xbox's AV cables directly into the TV.

I've used the xbox as a DVD player a few times and the picture quality was quite good on my 121cm rear projection Sony. I have the xbox plugged directly into a spare s-video input and optical to my amp for the 5.1 audio.

I think that the problem you have with passing the signal from the xbox through the VCR firebolt (or anyone else for that matter ) is that the copy protection (macrovision) is causing the bad picture. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong someone. :)
