View Full Version : XMS 888 divx player

Trent Nathan

I want to buy a divx/xvid player in next few days.

A friend tells me the Strathfield XMS 888 player is still the best one even
though newer players have been released.

What are peoples thoughts on this?

Dont even know if Strathfield still sell them anyway.

X-No-archive: yes
I bought one a few weeks ago for $179 and it's a beaut!
Clem
(But I can't figure out how to get it to output analogue AND digital sound
at the same time like my old player... it means I have to keep turning off
the digital when I want to watch in the kitchen.)

I was in there a week ago - they still had them for around $270. There might
be others badged as mpeg4 players.

: A friend tells me the Strathfield XMS 888 player is still the best
: one even though newer players have been released.
: What are peoples thoughts on this?

Short answer is that the 888 works perfectly well for divx and average for
normal dvd playback. If you want a standalone divx/dvd player, this one will
do the job just fine.

Had mine for two months now and very impressed. Not only plays DIVX, but
also raw MPEG1 and MPEG2. Very easy to use menu system. You can make the
player region 0 using the remote. The only problem is the annoying (always
on) red line led on the front. At $179 from Straithfield ....its a bargain.

Are cheap no name brands the only ones to have DivX playback capabilities?

Take a look at the Xensonic Z300 or the upmarket Momitsu (with network
capability and dvi outputs) or the Trio

The Momitsu V880N ( http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880n.html ) looks like
just the ticket for me, divx support and 10/100/wireless network ready -
yes please!

Anyone know who in Aus sells these, and how much?
http://www.com-tek.com.au/dvdplayer.htm lists the lower spec V880 but no
mention of price.

Too strange, only supports Xvid, Divx ets, THROUGH ETHERNET, which is
pretty pointless.

www.zensonic.com May 25th $143 does everything (apparently, and is
firmware upgradable)

I wasn't aware of that.
That is a serious setback... and as you say, very strange that it
supports divx but not on a cd/dvd.
If you have a file server though, having the option to stream via
Ethernet would be very, very useful indeed. But no local disc support
ruins that.

I'm only looking at the specs, I don't actually know anything you don't.
