Can anyone recommend a good value VCR/DVD combo unit?
It needs to be connected to an old TV.

NONE are good value when you can but a separate VCR & DVD with more
features for less money.
Clem
1. Are you sure you can buy them separately for less money?
2. What about the space saving advantages?

Yep.

That's the only possible reason I can imagine for buying one. (For a
caravan or bedroom where size is a big issue and features aren't a factor)

He's just said, he has a old TV, so I would assume, it has no AV inputs.
SO the DVD/Vcr combos have a RF output!! That's the Main reason you would
get a combo, instead of tiring to connect a Normal DVD to a Non AV TV.
Also its less connections to connect, and as said, less room, more compact..
Just get a Samsung, or LG, around $290..
Good value and easy to operate..

Well duuh!
Why not connect the DVD to the VCR and then the RF to the TV?
DVD player $70. 6 head Hi-Fi Stereo long-play VCR $130. Makes the combo
look a bit sick eh?

How well that works depends on how the VCR & DVD handle Macrovision.
Might be OK, might be crap.

I've never seen macrovision effects when just playing through a VCR; only
when recording.
Does it happen on some DVDs when playing through VCRs?
Is it the DVD or the VCR?

VCR, really - some (most, I think) only lose the picture when recording, as
you've seen,
but a few lose it just passing the video though.
Solution - Macrovision remover or Macrovision free DVD player.
G'day Marc,
You've seen a few suggestions but a bit more info would be helpful.
Why the combo unit in the first place?
R/F connection only TV?
Is space a real factor?
You'd just prefer both in one unit?
Cheaper to get an all in one?

Teac VCR with a Phillips DVD player connected into one of its AV inputs.
Movies unwatchable. Same DVD player connected into a Sony VCR in the
same manner. Perfectly watchable. Same DVD connected to a cheap HIFI
Sanyo VCR (under $200 in Kmart recently, small form factor), plays OK as
well.
The Sony could also record movies off the DVD player. Not that I did
this very often. Usually on DVDs that we hadn't watched and had to be
returned. Watch and then use the tape for something else.
