Its a "Go ***k on this disney" animated feature film. The most successful japanese film ever created (live action or animated).

Here is a review

The Sunday Telegraph, 15/12/02
Reviewer: Peter Le Petit
Rating: ****
Spirited Away (PG)
Stars (voices): Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Jason Marsden and Lauren Holly.
Director: Hayao Miyazaki.
Where: Hoyts and Greater Union, United Collaroy and Chauvel.

Such a surreal treat this film and one that will not just amaze younger filmgoers but their parents as well.

This Japanese animated feature uses some of the style of the "anime" pictures, the simplistic eyes and stable backgrounds, but takes the story and characters a lot further.

Here we begin with a typical family (Japanese in this case), mother and father driving to their new home with a sulking 10-year-old girl in the back seat less than convinced this is going to be either good or interesting.

Taking a wrong turning they stumble through a tunnel and into what seems to be a deserted market.

The girl is not so sure of it but the parents sit down to enjoy a hearty meal and suddenly, as dusk creeps over the weird stalls and streets, they are transformed into pigs.

Large pigs. Giant pigs, in fact.

Chihiro, the girl, is also caught but without being transformed. Except that the demons and witches of this strange world put her to work as a drudge, performing impossibly dingy, smelly servile tasks.

This seems to be the fault of the nasty old grey-haired woman who rules the village (and who changes into a nastier bird during the hours of daylight).

If that is not enough to disturb then Chihiro finds she has to attend to gross demons like the Stink God and No Face.

And the girl, a precocious brat at first, finds herself working extra hard as a slave to these grotesques because, if she doesn't, her parents will cease being giant pigs and become sides of bacon.

The one gleam of light in this nightmare Is a strange boy called Haku.

He seems to be unaffected by the spells inflicted on everyone else in the village and can also produce his own form of magic.

Not enough to charm Chihiro's parents and herself back to normality but enough to give her a fighting chance.

What incredible visions this film produces.

One after another the amazing nightmares and dreams follow each other.

In the end producing a work that will stand above most animated features made to date.

Its inspired blend of tradition and modern values give the film another sense of substance and there are few In the world who will not recognise the surly girl and cheer at her rather timely transformation.

As a family treat for the holidays this cannot be bettered. Note that there are two versions, the English dubbed version and at the Chauvel in Paddington you can catch the original Japanese version with subtitles.
