i think you have upto $AUD 350 worth before getting taxed (don't quote me on that though :D). I have imported boxsets that are worth $AUD 300 and luckily i have not been taxed for them.

I really wouldn't advice getting more dvds worth that much as you will almost get taxed on them. I have heard a story where a person has imported a boxset, same one as i ordered (8 DVDs) around $AUD 290, and another 3 dvd boxset around $AUD 80 (have that too, but didn't get them shipped together). Now this person got those 2 boxsets shipped together and he got a whopping $AUD 92 tax on the dvds.

So, if i were you, don't import anything that will equate to more than $AUD 350

Sauceman, if you're reading this, you should know who im talking bout, forgot who it was from the MM forums, but it was the escaflowne movie and series boxsets :D

I remember the story well :D

It's odd... whoever that was got slugged with a big customs charge, and only last week Myself and another Madboard regular did a joint import of R2 anime DVDs that totalled over $700AU, and we didn't get hit with a single cent of tax.

We rock :D

was it sent to one address or two different addresses? cause if it was sent to two different addy's, then thats probably one reason you didn't get taxed, other than that, i would just call you one lucky motha f0x0r :D

The limit is 500 aud .But if you have two seperate shipments arrive in the customs office at the same time going to the same address then you will have those two shipments added together and taxed if they are over 500 aud.Ask mac about this as it happened to him with one shipment fromn the u.s and one from Japan hit customs at the same time and he git billed:o

I made an enquiry to Customs about the thresholds etc a while back... Following is their reply.

The importation of DVDs will not attract Customs Duty; however GST of 10% will be payable.

The GST is charged on the purchase price of the goods, converted into Australian dollars, plus any Customs Duty payable, plus the freight and insurance paid or payable to transport the goods to Australia.

Once the value of an importation reaches $250, a formal Customs Entry will be required to clear the goods, unless they arrive via Australia Post. Goods arriving via Australia Post do not require clearance on a formal Customs Entry until the value of the consignment reaches $1000.

A Customs Entry has a processing fee of approximately $50.

If a consignment is cleared informally, and the total Customs Duty and GST payable on the consignment comes to less than $50, this amount will not be collected by Customs. Once the amount of Customs Duty and GST payable on an informally cleared consignment reaches $50, the entire amount will be
collected.

If the goods are cleared on a formal Customs Entry, any Customs Duty and GST will be collected.

Please be aware that if your goods are sent via a courier company, the
company will generally automatically create a Customs Entry on your behalf
to clear the goods, whatever the value of the importation.
