I saw a HD Def Dgtec box at JB for $599. Didnt have as many outputs as the
other boxes.
It wasnt hooked up to any tvs, so couldnt see the quality.

Anybody have any thoughts on it.

Cheers Michael

Like you, I just saw it at JB Hifi. The model code is DH 2000A PLUS.

The DGTEC website is badly out of date, unfortunately. Their "breaking
news" section hadn't been upgraded since 2002! so I'm not surprised the
new box isn't on there yet.

As a result, I called DGTEC today and spoke to one of their tech guys.

A lot of pre-release web rumours said that the 2000A PLUS would handle
interactive television (such as Channel 9's new "Sports Active").
However, the tech guy confirmed that it *DOESN'T* handle interactive
television. He said that they are currently looking at an upgrade to
allow it to do that, which may simply involve a software upgrade, but
may require a new chip (which they hope isn't the case). He couldn't
give me a time-frame on that (it sounds like they don't have a final
solution yet, anyway), and couldn't tell me if it will cost the buyer
more money or if it'll be a free upgrade. So if you want to use Sports
Active, I believe that the Teac ITV-D500 is the only model to do it,
currently.

The fewer outputs compared to the older DH 2000A is disappointing, as
you can't output from component video to both TV and VCR separately. But
you can use one of the other outputs to your VCR. The only people who
would be really upset would be people with DVD recorders who want the
highest picture quality possible.

I'm currently wondering what the PLUS stands for in the name. I wish I'd
asked him directly what the improvements were (over the older model),
because the features I was hoping for weren't there, and there are fewer
outputs than the older one. Maybe someone else will pick up the
improvements.

Can you really tell the difference in video playback between component and
svideo or composite.

Apparently less than 10% of accidents are caused by drivers exceeding the speed
limit.

You lump svideo kind of with composite... you find that there is very
little difference between component and svideo, but a very big difference
between those two and composite.
Composite lumps the "light" and the "colour" (luminance and chrominance)
together into one cable, which causes problems with colour artifacts (cross
colouration) and dot crawl to name a few
(http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Articles/VideoArtefacts/VideoArtefacts.html),
where as svideo separates chrominance and luminace, and component goes one
step further and separates the colour information (far less noticable then
with composite).
And don't say that normal people can't spot these artifacts, it merely takes
a nice contrasting image (like the menu system of your player) or a stripy
shirt (or whiteline on a tennis court etc) to show up the artifacts I
mentioned above.
