Hey all,

i just found your forum here today, and i was wondering if you could help me out...

i was given a DVD player for a christmas present. It's not a great one (i'm told it was only about $180 or so). It is a Nintaus N9800. I know that it's not a great model or anything, so i should expect problems, but it seems to everything i could possibley want it to do, so i'm happy. the problem is this:

i only have three DVDs atm. "Something For Kate - A Diversion", "Back to the future Trilogy" and "The Lord of the Rings". the first DVD i tried was the Something for kate one (an Australian musical band), and it worked PERFECTLY, and still does. however, when i try to play either of the other two DVDs, they alternate between having wavy lines that distort the picture, to looking ok except it seems like the brightness is fading up and down and the picture seems to knock from side to side on the screen... i can still see and hear the movie fine, but it's like watching a really worn out video tape.

i'm fairly sure that it is not the signal, and that everything is plugged in properly, because i have the something for kate DVD working fine without any of the problems i have with the other two...

i would REALLY appreciate it if someone could fill me in on whether this is something i can fix by playing with settings, whether is it a fault in the player, or whether the model is jsut crappy and i should take it back and change to a different brand/model..

thanks in advance,
-Matti

Hi,
I have a Nintaus 9901(earlier model) but have had for 18months with NO problems!!

Not sure exactly what your problem is,so can't help you there I'm afraid- mine plays R1 disks as well as R4(multi-region player) and can't say anything bad about it.

do you have the dvd player hooked up through your vcr? if so this is the problem as almost all dvd movies (titles) have this macrovision protection, it is basically invented to stop you recording the dvd onto video tape, i am sure none of us ever would but this is what will happen, perhaps your music dvd does not have this protection.

If you plug the dvd into the tv directly the picture would be fine, but if it is an older tv without a/v inputs then you will need to buy a box to convert the sinal from a/v to rf, these usually cost about $50 to $60.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Darren.

thanks heaps mate... after reading a few other posts here, i came to a similar conclusion, but i have an older TV that only has the rf connection (like you said), so i wasn't sure what to do. but i guess i'll need to try to find one of those boxes then ey?

thanks again,

or you could buy one of those Macrovision defeater
kits from places like DSE and then you could still
have it connected through the VCR.

hrmmm.. i can't find one of those kits on the DSE website? are they actually called macrovision defeater kits, or not? are they cheaper than the box thing mentioned earlier?

Hi again, i manage one of the dse stores and the kit you talk about is no longer available, although a few stores may have them left, the kit was called a video stabiliser and from memory sold for around $80 but price came down in order to clear product.

The box i mentioned earlier sell for $59.95 the catalogue number is g1507 they are also sold in tandy store as dse owns and runs tandy.

Hey,

i ended up taking the DVD player back to JB HiFi and talking to the guy there. he agreed that problem was macrovision, and suggested a few solutions. One involved something costing about $70, but losing ALOT of quality (apparently), another involved $120, and didn't loose quality, and then he suggested getting a new TV. Since i have basically no money, i couldn't really afford the last two options, so he suggested a different Nintaus model which has macrovision "disabled". Being $40 more than my original player, i was a little cautious, but purchased it anyway. he said something about only 95% of them having it turned off, due to the factories being slack, so if it didn't work, he told me to take it back. Well, it didn't work, so i did.. and the one i just got back STILL doesn't work. (The model i now have is a Nintaus N9738.. it seems exactly the same as my original model, but it has 5.1 surround sound capabilities, and looks a bit cooler.. that's about the only difference i can see.. oh and it's more expensive)

So, firstly, is this guy bullshittin' me? or is he right, and i've just been given two of the 5% that have it still turned on? If he is full of shit, then should i take it back and get the RF Video Modulator? Will i lose much picture quality? (the description for that RF video thing says "not suitable for dvd players"... wondering if that's true?)

Thanks again for all your help everyone,

-Matti

Good News for you dude. I have had two Nintaus DVDs. They ALL have Macrovision Bypass. You just have to activate it. The instructions are not in the book that comes with the player, so here they are :
Macrovision Free setup

To turn on NINTAUS DVD-player into macrovision free

· Click OPEN to open the Disc tray.

· On the numerical button type 9926 you can now see the following on your DVD-player.

· Code 9 means your player is Code free.

· Macrovision ON means : macrovison is active

· Click on SELECT to turn the player OFF

· Then the player is Macrovision Free

· Click on SETUP

Now your player is Macrovision free

Enjoy !!
