Anyone a fan of these best of sets being released, or would you prefer the complete seasons.
I am assuming it is being done to test the market -- but lets hope they have a full on season release.
After just watching the best of magnum p.i with one episode being a cliffhanger, with no 2nd part - the best ofs are a little bit annoying compared to the season...
But in saying that some is better than none, and bring on the complete seasons!!

Damn! That sucks about the cliffhanger. :(
Yeah, they are a good fix and are maybe a good solution for those who want something to have a bit of a flashback, but can't really afford a fully blown boxed set release.

Is your memory of Magnum good, say from an episode of 1986.... Cos I'll ask you in PM.
By cliffhanger, well the episode ended but I really wanted to know what happened in the next episode

Your best bet would be to look up an episode guide online. Some of them are very good and will tell you all you want to know.

Sounds like a plan. cheers... Cos if I wait until they do season by season (which I hope) it'll bloody Season 7 I imagine and we all know that'd be at least 3 years down the track

"Best ofs" are a really stupid idea in my opinion. 90% of those who would be willing to buy a TV series on DVD are big fans of that show, and would happily buy the full sets. However, like houndsy, they may be unwilling to buy a best of because they are waiting for a complete series.
The catch 22 is of course that the producers then see bad sales for the "Best Of", assume it's because nobody wants the show on DVD, and therefore never release a full series set. :rolling:

I agree with best of CDs, I love those but not TV series. If you are to release a tv series release the whole bit or none at all (IMO that is best).

Oh I see - so this thread was just a tempting bit of bait you laid out to enlist people for your propaganda campaign. I know your game! ;)

Best of's bite harder than that bloke in Rugby that had a fascination with his finger and where he could put it.... ;)
I say release the WHOLE series, if the X-Files was in bits and pieces I would never had bothered.
Imagine, 20 years from now they release a 'best of' of 24, now that would work :rolling:

I generally don't buy TV series on DVD. However if I were to, then I'd go for complete box sets (season by season or total) rather than "Best Of's". Maybe it's a completist mentality. Some series I remember and would like to see I'd rather like to see in the order the episodes came out - to get the sense of progression and development over the entire run, not just somebody's idea of highlights (who determines which episodes are the "best" anyway). As was earlier mentioned by redbears, some series don't lend themselves to such potentially arbitrary fragmentation (another possible example, the cult 60s TV show with Patrick McGoohan, The Prisoner, which I think was released intact).

Best Of's are actually good for Talk shows, and the like. Where it would be so boring to sit through an entire season for most. :)

In certain cases "Best ofs" are the only alternative.
For example, due to the BBCs tardy archiving process, we couldn't have "complete seasons" of Dr. Who, since there are over 100 episodes that are lost forever.
Or in situations like "The Looney Tunes", by Warner Brothers own admittance, there are probably 100+ cartoons that were, to put it politely, crap. Which is why they are releasing those in "Best ofs".
"The Goodies" is slightly different. As Oz mentioned, this collection of 8 episodes (chosen by the official Goodies fanclub as being the best ever), was released to gauge the demand for more releases in future.
I would imagine that the Goodies would be similar to Dr. Who though, in that early episodes would be lost. So perhaps what we might end up seeing is a series of "Best Ofs".
And speaking of which, this from the official fanclub:
"Sales for this first DVD set have been so strong that a second DVD is being planned, although we do not expect it be released this year. The only confirmed episode to date is "Radio Goodies". "
Note there is no real guide as to what they meant by "this year". Given that the first set was released in 2003, I would imagine that would be the year they are referring to...

At least they pump out the Red Dwarf to the fans.
Can only hope for the Brittas Empire on DVD... Never seen it, but I hear Chris Barrie is funnier in that than in Dwarf....
