I'm thinking about getting Foxtel digital but I'm not sure of the hidden
charges. What are the hidden charges and can someone explain to me how the
FBO works and the charges involved with that?

It costs you $5.95 per FBO movie, but if you take the platinum package you
get two 'free' FBO movies per month. There's no hidden charges as far as
I'm aware..they're just not good value for money that's all.

beware also of Foxtel's stated "watch the movie as many times as you like
for 24 hours". Although this is almost the case, the hours are from 6.00am
to 5.59am the next morning. So the old practice of watching a movie in the
evening and then again in the morning before taking it back to the video
store is no more.

IMHO it should be 24 hours from the time you first order it, or should be
advertised differently. Could this possibly be classed as false
advertising? Especially if, for instance, you order your movie in the
evening (as most people probably would) ... say, around 7pm ... then you
only really have it available for 11 hours, not the full 24.

You have to have it plugged in to the phone line... I assume so it can make
an ADSL type of connection to Foxtel when using FBO and other interactive
services, surely it can't be dialup? That would screw up your phone bill
seriously if that were the case and it would qualify as a hidden charge!?

Yes, it is dialup.
It dials a 0198xxxxxx number, charged at whatever your local call rate is.
Apparently it only dials up once a month (just before they calculate your
account for that month) or when the charges on the card reach $50. Yet to be
seen personally as I'm sticking with the old cable service for now.

It isn't ADSL or ADSL like. The STU contains a dial-up modem and it calls an
0198 number (charged at a local call rate)allegedly only once a month or so
to update your billing information with any FBO/PPV charges. The big bonus
is that if you have dial-up and leave the STU modem plugged in your dial-up
speed will be reduced by anywhere from 8kbps to around 50% of what you can
get now, depending on where you live. Fortunately you don't need to have the
STU plugged in. In fact you can have it installed without the need to plug
the STU in at all. And yes, it is a hidden charge.

I have had my STU telephone lines left disconnected from the first day, so
if you are paranoid about it like me, pull em out.

"And yes, it is a hidden charge". What is???

Because Foxtel hide it, or at least attempt to. If it's not in plain sight
it's hidden.

They're usually supplied to you after you sign up. They're not explained
over the phone. As I said, if it's not in plain sight it's hidden.
